for NNN0LHI...student uniforms
Looking at a private school for one of our little ones this year (homeschooling isn't working as well for this child) and we were confronted with the uniform...meaning, the cost of procuring the uniform. i like the idea. they are allowed SOME flexibility to express themselves, but the uniforms make sense to me.

do you think uniforms are beneficial? i think they provide structure, lack of taunting about clothes, community and look pretty classy, to boot.

1. We had to wear'em. I must say it made deciding what to wear very easy.

But nobody had any idea what was in style.

Edit: I didn't really answer the question. When I was in HS, having come from public school prior, yeah I complained about uniforms. Looking back, I think they're a good idea.

2. I tend to not be a fan of uniforms
I think it robs students of their individuality and promoted conformity.

I am for dress codes, but not uniforms.

3. groovy...it's not like we'll have a choice if we go with this school
but i do like the idea and like i said, they can accessorize in several ways that are acceptable so they do have some flexibility to express themselves.

thanks for the input!

Ultimately, I don't think it's all that big a deal either way.

6. If I may... I went out of my way to buy "Made in the USA"
http://www.americansworking.com/clothingchildren.html

I was able to buy shirts, shorts and socks for a teenager.

Good luck. Uniforms are here to stay.

9. Mainly the uniform serves as a way to identify members of a church ... which benefits the church....

-- same as the Yamulka and other religious articles --

crosses abd medals worn as jewelry --

Rather I think we have too much allowed societies to be

influenced by consumerism - status symbols -- however, this

economy may be waking up Americans as to how costly this

consumerism is in the end --

Not only in a loss of character and spirit of children who

are so influenced and moved by what they own or product labels --

but as we wake up to the huge damage done to our economy and

to the planet -- !!

Really these are choices parents have to wake up to --

not children.

10. My kids wear uniforms
They're in public school. Personally, I hate it. Before the school system switched to uniforms everything I bought them was something they could wear to school. Now I have to keep 3 kids in 2 sets of clothes. And it's not like uniforms have decreased the number of incidents in school or impacted the performance of the schools. (My girls are not in a high school known for its excellence.) I think it's an unnecessary burden on parents in what is a pretty cash poor school system. It's money I'd much rather spend on other things. Say books. My sophomore couldn't even get books for 3 of her classes because they don't have enough, and she's in honors classes. I'd be happy to write the school a check for books, but instead I'm buying uniforms. For us and our school, it's just stupid.

Oh, and our uniforms are navy or khaki pants and white, red, or black polo type shirts. We don't have to buy them from any particular place and they can't have logos on them at all. The other side of town wears different colored shirts. It's based on which high school you belong to. So my son in elem school wears the same colors as my girls in high school.

12. Our public middle school just went to uniforms
Non-label, Navy or white polos, khaki pants. They aren't allowed to wear web belts, they can't even show their individuality in their socks. It's more strict than the charter school my daughter went to. They asked any parent who bought outfits for their student, to also consider buying an item to donate to the uniform closet for needy students. I really don't think it'll make a lot of difference in bullying in school, but it sure makes getting ready in the morning a lot easier. I appreciate that since we're out waiting for the bus at 6:10.

That being said, it's the 2nd day of school and my son said that there are 3 or so kids (6th grade) who are refusing to adhere to the dress code. One is saying it's against their religion (son said he comes in wearing a white floor length tunic). Other kids are pushing the rules by wearing non-school colors, guages, piercings, etc. They are giving them warnings this week.

11. I think that uniform took a lot of pressure off of my mom
because we were poor during my grade school years. In a way, it would be have been a relief to go to a jr. high that did the same thing but our Catholic school was a year behind me when we moved to Silicon Valley.
