Rupert Boneham, the Indianapolis man who became a celebrity thanks to a 2003 stint on the reality TV show “Survivor,” is exploring a run for governor of Indiana.
Boneham filed papers with the the Indiana Election Division this week to form an exploratory committee to run as a Libertarian.
A campaign spokesman, Sean Shepard, said Boneham is not doing interviews at this time. But on his campaign website, www.rupertforgovernor.com, Boneham said that he will make a final decision about running for governor in the next several weeks.
“I have spent my entire adult life serving my community and I see an opportunity to
make a difference for Indiana,” he wrote on the site. “While surveying the current choices for our next governor, I do not see anyone that has an understanding of what daily life is like for many Hoosiers nor anyone who appears to understand the harm that misguided government policies are doing to our communities.”
If Boneham succeeds in getting the Libertarian nomination for governor, he’ll face long odds. Two Republicans are seeking the GOP nomination — U.S. Rep. Mike Pence and Fishers businessman Jim Wallace — along with one Democrat, former House Speaker John Gregg.
