Proud to be human.

Never really got being proud of an accident of birth.

1. well, if he's an immigrant, he chose to become an American.
so I could see it from that angle.

the real question is, what does being an American mean, other than having a citizenship card?

4. I'm an accident of birth, but even if I were an immigrant ...
... there is SO MUCH about which one should not be proud in America.

From Baggers to Bachmann to Bozell.

2. Being human is an 'accident of birth' as well
Don't really get your logic.

it's pretty much a lock that the offspring will be too. :)

22. I imagine the point is illustrating the absurdity of mainlining pride in a mere accident...?
I imagine the point is illustrating the absurdity of maintaining pride in mere chance...?

3. Yea how dare anyone have national pride.. FUCK THEM!!! Rah Rah Rah!!
Ridiculous.

Do you feel better about yourself because you're proud about something you think is better then what they are proud about??

Is it now wrong to have a sense of pride in the country you were born

I'm also going to go ahead and say my parents WANTED to give birth to me in America, it was no accident. Thank you very much.

Snooty post is snooty.

9. I stopped being proud of being an American in the 1960's
When I began to understand what Vietnam was all about.

And I realized that an accident of birth is nothing to be proud about.

This is no longer a country to be proud of.

18. Like Doug Stanhope says:
"Nationalism does nothing but teach you how to hate people you've never met...and take pride in accomplishments you had no part in whatsoever."

23. Oh look I have quotes too.

I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives. I like to see a man live so that his place will be proud of him. ~Abraham Lincoln

Our country is not the only thing to which we owe our allegiance. It is also owed to justice and to humanity. Patriotism consists not in waving the flag, but in striving that our country shall be righteous as well as strong. ~James Bryce

My kind of loyalty was loyalty to one's country, not to its institutions or its office-holders. ~Mark Twain

A private man, however successful in his own dealing, if his country perish is involved in her destruction; but if he be an unprosperous citizen of a prosperous city, he is much more likely to recover. Seeing, then, that States can bear the misfortunes of individuals, but individuals cannot bear the misfortunes of States, let us all stand by our country. ~Thucydides

I like this part by de Gaulle a-lot. I think it speaks to the discussion we are having here...

Patriotism is when love of your own people comes first; nationalism, when hate for people other than your own comes first. ~Charles de Gaulle

12. Nothing wrong with patriotism.
Just because the teapers gave it a bad name doesn't mean it's wrong. My d-i-l is proud to be Okinawan. I'm proud to be an American. I'm sure my ancestors were proud to be Irish, Spanish and German. My cats are proud to be cats. My dog is stupid.

I don't think being proud of being an American means you need to feel we're "better" than anyone else. Hell, I'm a Bears fan. I don't really think the Packers are a bunch of neanderthals fed on cheese and crappy beer, but it makes me proud to call myself a Bears fan to think they are.

Not really proud to be human, though. Not until we're invaded by aliens, that is. :patriot:

13. I'm envious of anyone who can truly find that much pride in this country right now to promp them to
put a bumper sticker on their car that proclaims it.

And the implication is that others (damn liberals) are not proud of this country the way he/she is.

19. I wouldn't mind having one that read
"I'm Proud of Some Americans"; namely those who are decent people. But then again, I might as well have a bumper sticker that reads "I'm Proud of Some People".

21. How do you know it was an accident?
What goes on before we are born? I don't know....do you know enough about what goes on before we are born to say for sure it is only an accident?
