Republican Representative Complains About Salary At Town Hall, Says His Job Doesn’t Mean Much
August 25, 2011

At a town hall event in Florida yesterday, GOP Representative Steve Southerland took a question from a constituent about his salary. He proceeded to tell the good people he supposedly represents that his salary is small considering how many hours he puts in and the risks he runs.

“And by the way, did I mention? They’re shooting at us,” Southerland told constituents. “If you think this job pays too much, with those kinds of risks and cutting me off from my family business, I’ll just tell you: This job don’t mean that much to me. I had a good life in Panama City.”

These are quite outlandish remarks considering Representative Southerland makes a Congressional salary of $174,000. And what’s worse is that his remarks come at a time when most people are either unemployed or having to work two or more jobs just to get by on a weekly basis. Southerland’s words are also insensitive. Saying his cushy job doesn’t mean much to him is very disheartening to the people who elected him to represent them because they thought he actually cared about working for them. Most people in this country right now would give an arm and a leg to have that good paying job. It’s supposed to be an honor to serve the American people in the halls of Congress. But to Southerland, it’s not. And you can bet that many other Republicans feel the exact same way. And like Southerland, the only reason they serve is for their own benefit, not for their constituents.

1. Well...
Isn't the house working like two weeks then the take a week off? And how many vacations do they get? If we figure out his salary, plus benefits, then find out just how many days he actually works, I bet he is doing pretty damned good! Most members of congress also have other income, and the majority are actually "millionaires". Making comments like this shows just how out of touch these morons really are with the people the voted them into office.

3. I've a half of mind of doing my own "This Week In Conservative Stupidity" post
Not only do we have this dipshit, but we also have an anti-gay GOPer senator in the PR Senate posting his naked ass on a gay website, along with Unca Pat Buchanan complaining that there are too many white guys getting killed in Afghanistan.

Not to mention the daily barrage of bullshit spewing from the lips of all the GOP prez hopefuls.

It's a target rich environment.

4. He talks big because he already has his foot in the door and is set up for life.
Pension, healthcare, connections. He could leave that job and find some other lucrative political crap.

It's not the same out here in the real world, but he thinks he's smarter and better.

I'd like to see how much that $174,000 would mean if he was in the unemployment line.

8. That Depends
With the exception of the connections, unless he's served 5 years in Congress he doesn't qualify for a pension and as soon as he's out of office the healthcare stops.

The question is are the people of his district smart enough to vote this bastard out so he can return to his "job"?

6. I wonder how that self-pitying response was received. And if he'll
be reelected (if he runs again since the "job don't mean that much to me".) Pig.
