Hurricane Irene: Surfer Killed in Virginia Beach Due to Storm
August 26, 2011 11:40 PM EDT

Hurricane Irene hasn't arrived in Virginia yet, but already one death is being attributed to the massive storm. According to reports on the Weather Channel, a surfer in Virginia Beach was killed by a monster wave. Why is it that surfers love hurricanes so much?

Despite the lure to surf the massive waves a hurricane brings to shore, it's best to stay ashore and stay indoors during a hurricane. Apparently, this surfer decided to venture out into the water during one of the worst hurricanes to hit the East Coast in decades. Sadly, that decision cost him his life and caused his family a lot of pain.

2. More than a few of us are wired to need some danger in our lives..
And like just about all human characteristics it's on a variable scale..

If it were not for the adventuresome among us we would still be living in the trees.

14. Other keyword "trees"..
I don't know about you but my feet don't fit branches very well.

Personally I'm glad we don't live in the trees any more and I thank my foolhardy ancestors who took the great risk of climbing down to the ground and standing upright.

4. I used to surf prior to a storm when the waves begin kicking up.
That is, before I got too old. The key is knowing when to call it a day.

7. Surfers are a different breed, I swear.
When I lived in Southern California I remember the surfers getting all pumped up because there was some typhoon out in the Pacific somewhere and the surfing was going to be great! Ten-foot swells! :wtf:

8. Back in the day when Bush Sr. was president there was a storm in the NE
that pumped out massive swells in Palm Beach Fl. Perfect day, no clouds, no wind and absolutely perfect double overhead sets. I almost drowned that day as it was above my skill/experience level. The next day was waves of death that were unsurfable unless you were a Hawaii North Shore vet. I recall at least one surfer disappearing that day.

15. The Halloween swell of 1989
I remember it well. I surfed that swell and I surfed Irene on Friday and Saturday.
The Halloween swell was massive.
Irene was too close to the coast to generate any really good, big surf.

9. Damn! we are going to need to get another surfer for Va. Beach
Darn the luck!!

Actually there are three "groups" of people that I have consistently hit it off with for no particular reason: surfers, bikers, and Latinos. No idea why but we just really get along great whenever we meet at parties and the like.
