President Barack Obama Friday cut short his Martha's Vineyard vacation as Hurricane Irene took aim at the Eastern Seaboard.

Obama decided to head back to Washington Friday night instead of waiting until Saturday morning as planned, White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters.

2. The last Democrat who was president during a major hurricane that affected me was LBJ.

LBJ was on the scene the very next day assuring those in the shelter that help was on the way. He made an announcement that "all red tape would be cut" for assistance.

I've been hoping that Obama would follow in LBJ's footsteps. I'll never forget the impression LBJ made on my then-young mind during that Twilight Zone period.
