City specific Hurricane tips
If you or the people you care about are in the pathway of Irene this coming weekend and into next week, check these tips for hurricane preparedness:

1.Keep tuned in to the weather forecast, online or on the radio or TV and follow the instructions.

2.Make a plan for what you will do in a major crisis and where you will go if evacuated. Make sure friends and family know the plan.

3.Plan on power outages. “This storm is going to cause a large number of power outages and tree damage,” Masters said. “Millions of people should prepare to be without power for a long time.” That means if you live in a high-rise, be ready to take the stairs, in the dark; have plenty of batteries around and flashlights that work.

1. Without power "for a long time" doesn't just mean a couple hours -
down here it can be weeks. Be prepared.

2. I keep telling people that when Gloria went over L.I. we were out of power for 6 days
Usually brings people up short.

I am lucky enough to have city water and a gas stove, but I'll fill the bathtub up anyway and bought several cases of drinking water - enough for the family for a week - and filled the two propane tanks we use for our outdoor grill just in case. Plus non-perishable food for 7 days.

Most of the water I bought is in the extra freezer we have downstairs. As it melts, we will have cold fresh water, and we'll have extra cooling ice in the meantime.

I was trying to explain what 75 mile an hour winds felt like to my husband and son, neither of whom have been in more that a bad thunder storm. I suggested we drive up route 80 at 75 miles an hour, roll down the windows, and they could stick their hands out. Now imagine that force over your entire body. For hours. With stronger gusts possible.

Now if I can just convince my Mom to spend the weekend with me instead of on the 6th floor of a 150 year old brick building with huge windows along it's street facing wall, I'd be a bit happier.

3. Sounds like you're prepared,
and agree about mom - it would be great if you can get her to a safer location.

4. My friend from Texas told me to make sure I have enough Charcoal/Propane for my grill
Because after the storm, if we don't get power back for awhile, it might be the only way I'll have hot meals for awhile.
