East Coast Refineries Shutting Down -
Just a reminder to fill your vehicle with gas, even if you are hunkerin' down. With these refineries closing down the prices will rise, and it may cause some stations to run out of gas (been there, seen that down here in the Gulf). Woke up thinking about you East Coast - hoping things go as smoothly as possible this weekend.

Here is the article -

Refineries likely to shut as Hurricane Irene nears
CHRIS KAHN, AP Energy Writer
Updated 11:53 p.m., Thursday, August 25, 2011

NEW YORK (AP) — East Coast refineries are likely to close in advance of Hurricane Irene's arrival this weekend, analysts say. The shutdowns are already boosting gasoline prices.

The storm pounded the Bahamas Thursday with winds of 115 mph and it could reach East Coast refineries, which are concentrated in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, by Sunday afternoon.

Refineries are already starting to turn off equipment and tie things down.

"Even if the storm eventually misses them, they can't take chances," says Ben Brockwell at the Oil Price Information Service, which monitors fuel shipments around the country...

2. Always ... we know how that goes.
Mainly wanted to put out the warning to get gas this morning, ahead of the storm. We always end up with long lines and stations running out down here. Certainly not earth shattering news, but if it helps a few people remember to fill up early my work is done.

4. They do it down here too - and the stations do run out. And they stay empty
until the trucks get around again. So do the stores. Even if you evacuate you've gotta be careful on when to return because the stores have to ditch all their perishables that they haven't sold and wait for restocking (and we have to do the same with our refrigerator/freezers if the power has been out for days).

5. Curious thing here.....

Because we are located on a 'hub' of the pipelines actually running out is very uncommon but the gouging continues nonetheless. Gas here is always considerably cheaper than the national average.

7. Which part is confusing?
Blindpig and I both live in the South. In his area there are a lot of pipelines and gas is always less than the national average, as it is here in South Houston.

However, when hurricanes appear the individual stations will hike their prices up because people don't have a choice - they've got to fill up to evacuated. We actually have stations run out of gas (despite all of our refineries down here), but they don't run out where he is.

10. Your state hardly taxes it, that's why.

11. That has something to do with it.

Yet this area has the lowest prices in the state too.

13. No county tax on gasoline in this state.

You gotta be kidding, no county council would survive the backlash, just the way it is around here. Now they're big on hospitality taxes, even in nowherevilles like this.
