WHY is Obama staying on Martha's Vineyard??
Somehow, I don't think an island is the safest place. I realize it may have diminished, but they could be in the worst quadrant. There has to be some place safer than that.
Is he worried about being called a scaredy cat? He is not setting a good example to say the least.
If he is listening to FEMA, he is doomed.

5. Obama has a "posse"? Really?
I know the Boston Herald is Just Another Rightwing Rag, but that's screwed up even for a JARR.

14. On the contrary, they think it's a badge of honor.
I'd rather get my news from supermarket tabloids than the Boston Herald.

3. Because he was going to leave on Saturday anyway?
With Hurricane Irene approaching, President Barack Obama and his family took advantage of what may prove to be the last good beach day before their Martha’s Vineyard vacation comes to an end on Saturday.

http://marthasvineyard.patch.com/articles/obama-hits-the-beach-dines-with-governor

So they're not leaving early - ie Friday. The latest tracking map I can find has Irene reaching Delaware at 2am Sunday. As long as he leaves (by helicopter, I presume) when the weather at Washington is still OK for flying, he's fine.

9. Who said he would be screaming and panicking?
I see no need for him to leave now as he has the means to leave, but don't call evacuations "panicking"

15. I might criticize him for some things.
However, leaving now would not be one of them.

11. Because it's 68 degrees, and a beautiful sunny morning.
He can be off the island in minutes, and the storm is still days away.

Besides, the Boston Herald finds fault with ANYTHING he does.

19. Exactly, he won't be leaving by road
He will be leaving via helicopter, then to air force one. AF1, I'm sure, is ready to leave at a moment's notice. I would be willing to bet that if Obama decided to leave, he could be off the island in less than 20 minutes.

23. True story - Wednesday afternoon AF1 flew directly overhead
I was sitting on the patio when I heard the drone of a large aircraft engine - I looked up to see AF1 gliding ever so slowly on the approach to the air base in Bourne, Cape Cod.

Quite a thrill to see it barely above the treetops.......so low the markings were clearly visible.

You're correct - he could be off the island via helicopter and onto AF1 in minutes. It's here and waiting.

13. Because
he'll be wrong if he leaves a day early and wrong if he leaves as scheduled. So he might as well enjoy his last day of vacation. The sh*t is going to hit the fan with this storm and he's going to have a full plate (so, what else is new?) Besides. He'll be back in DC well before he and his 'posse' would be in jeopardy. He's not an idiot. He is, as always, calm, cool, and collected and not running around with his hair on fire. Or is that what folks want?

17. No. I don't call leaving panicking.
It doesn't do anybody good to run around like their hair is on fire. If he goes back to DC, he might get there before it hits. However, the effects of this storm will start getting their long before that.

16. I tend to start packing early when I hear even rumors of storms
coming towards Texas, but I have to deal with being south of Houston and needing to go North (there's millions of people between me and North Texas to get through!). I'm betting his evacuation will be much smoother. And the others are right - the repubs would yell about him running. He's pretty far north so I'm sure they'll move him tonight or early tomorrow.

18. Why not just wait till the height of the storm?
And then fly Air Force One right through it? Thats the attitude of the GOP these days? Here we are talking about wether the President and his family should get out of the way of a FUCKING Hurricane? This is actually a conversation of why he should stay or go based on the potential criticism. This is the President of the United States, I am dumbfounded.

The conversation has been moved so far to the right it's ridiculous. The President needs to pack up his family and get out of the way of that storm.

20. First of all, it is a BIG island.
It's not like he's on a little barrier island. MV has lots of high ground and had withstood a history of huge storms. Then, there is the fact that he's leaving Saturday anyway.

While not perfect, I thought most people (even Republicans) have admitted that FEMA has been very efficient and effective in the last few years.

30. 1) Because he's the President of the United States and can do anything he wants
1) Because he can get out of there in total safety and comfort any time he wants to leave.

I'd be there too, if I had Marine 1 to take me out on a moment's notice.
