1. I am in the path..
I am scheduled to fly out tomorrow, but my home & family will be left in low lying areas to evacuate, or not, without me.
I am stressed.

72. The last map I saw looked like the projected path had moved slightly eastward.
But it still is going to affect major cities and millions of people all along the East Coast. I'm in NE NY, and we're still in the path, though not quite the worst one. We're expecting lots of rain and strong winds, probably power outages, though that's not all that unusual here with the amount of snowstorms we experience. *sigh*

Thanks for your kind words. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. We've already experienced considerable flooding, especially to the North, so we hardly need more rain. Wish we could send this latest batch straight to you, since you need it a lot more than we do...

4. Thanks...I think we're gonna get screwed:
1. My home is built right next to what seems to have been a creek bed and we have had real problems when storms such as Floyd came thru: I had a river running alongside my house, it was frightening.

2. My office should be OK in Center City Philly since it's an old stone building BUT we are not built for strong winds in town, and there's going to be extreme debris issues if this hits. I think things will e disrupted for a number of days at least.

3. My mother of blessed memory's home, which I still own, is down on the bay in Ventnor, NJ. God only knows what is going to happen there. Christie is evacuating the county. That's probably not good news.

Crap-ola.

9. Eek!
My brother in law lives a block in from the beach in Wildwood- he went to my mom-in-law's.
My sister, niece and brother in law live a half block from the beach in Belmar- they're supposed to go to my mom's today. My sister is 8.5 months pregnant and my niece is 3.
My mom's about 10 miles inland. They will stay, for now...but they've gassed up the car and have emergency kits and tons of food. I'm worried for them, because of my sister's pregnancy and my mom's partner has cancer. They, like millions of others, don't need this stress.

10. Not in the path, but watching closely.
My parents, two brothers, grandmother, and several college friends are all in the path. I am really worried about my grandmother since she is right on the coast of NC (Outer Banks). Her house is only three miles to the beach. I am really hoping I get the same call from my mom I got a few days ago: "We're fine! Scary, but the earthquake (hurricane, now) did no damage."

18. thanks! I'm freaking out too.
I've got shrubs outside my window, I'm on the ground floor, which I think could break my windows.
My landlord says not to worry the windows are double glass, will not break.
I don't believe him. I'm going to ask someone today to cut as many of the branches which can be cut. It's not exactly a shrub, more like a low tree with branches which could break a window I think.

I also don't know if water can get into my apartment since I am half in the basement and half on the ground. When we've had flooding here, it hasn't happened, but this is going to be unprecedented.

People here in NJ do not have any idea of what we're in for. I used to live in TX so I do know and am scared but will ride it out.

The worst to me is to be cut off from all communication which I anticipate will happen. Hopefully not for too long.
Where it is going to be really bad is New York City. They are talking about shutting down the entire transit system, which I think has never before happened.

good luck to all.

78. Your landlord is an idiot.
Unless they are hurricane windows, He is wrong. Having 2 panes is better than one, but stating that they won't break as a fact is wrong. Hurricane windows are impact resistant, but they can't guarantee they won't break either.
Here is some info on hurricane windows from one company:

These impact windows made by Gorell are manufactured specifically for areas prone to violent weather like hurricanes. As beautiful as they are tough, Armor Max Plus™ windows meet Level "D" hurricane standards for protection against airborne debris and strong winds. These windows also provide cost-saving energy efficiency, outstanding protection against intrusion, filtering of damaging UV rays, significant sound reduction and greater safety.

Impact-resistant hurricane windows from Gorell feature three panes of glass—two of which sandwich an invisible yet tough protective interlayer. They also feature a high-performance SolarControl Max® Low-E coating, argon gas between the panes and heavy-duty double locks. Gorell offers several models of hurricane windows so that you can choose the best windows for the protection you need in your geographical area.

I looked at their warranty and it doesn't cover acts of god or specialty glass. I don't know what that means re these windows. I'd have to call them to make sure.

on the upside...I'm on the Midcoast. These things tend to peter out by the time they reach us. Not that they're insignificant, we usually do end up with plenty of wind and rain but not the damage. We'll still be prepared for the worst, as always though.

I woke up thinking about Irene. NY is a large population area and many don't have their own vehicles - really hoping Bloomberg is on top of this. I guess it can't go any worse than Katrina, but let's hope there were lessons learned.

Love the idea of a check-in thread.

28. I hope it tracks away from the coast somehow
I hope the storm shifts enough east or west to take the pressure off the coast, where really serious -- okay, catastrophic -- flooding could occur.

I'm in Ottawa, and we're now just off the predicted western edge of the storm. Frankly, it would be better if us inlanders were to get hit hard than people in NYC or anywhere along the coast.

Having visited New Orleans after Katrina, I'm less anxious about wind and water from the storm than I am about about the ocean surge that accompanies a hurricane. That's the real devastating part of a hurricane.

So here's to hoping. My thoughts are with those who now have to confront being hit straight on by this storm.

31. Me too
I'd be most happy to see the storm shift to the right (unlike DU!) and wander off offshore, but it seems that's not in the cards, so the more it shifts west the better.

I know it sounds odd to be wishing for a storm to come your way, but there you go.

As we saw in New Orleans, wind and rain can be very bad, but they are nowhere near as long-term devastating to a coastal area as is a 15-20 foot sea surge.

Ocean City (right on the Atlantic) is being evacuated as are some areas inland that are near rivers.

As of this morning, I'm relatively safe and outside the serious range of concern, but just barely. We should get tropical storm conditions. However, if Irene shifts to the west, that will probably mean evacuation for us, too.

depending on what model is considered for Delaware. I did a water and pet food run to the store last night. Totally forgot about the coffee issue. Thanks for the reminder. Guess I'll find it somewhere else, because there is NO WAY I'm going back to the grocery store today! I got 2 of the last cases of water they had out last night.

Our development is on a hill. As long as the pumps from our water tower have backup power when the electricity goes out, we have water (low pressure, but still have water). I don't know how long the backup power is supposed to last, but I know it's not over 5-6 hrs. We're prepared just in case.

I'm most worried about the tons of trees around our house. :scared:

46. A lot of my relatives
live in and around Norfolk VA and VA Beach. My elderly dad lives alone on the Delmarva peninsula so my sis went to pick him up and take him across the Bay to where she lives near Williamsburg. His small house --within a mile of the Atlantic--is under mandatory evacuation and it's possible it could be seriously damaged. Dad got so upset and sleepless that he had a fall before the ride. He forgot to renew one of his essential medications also. Waiting to hear how they are doing. Dad told me that he heard on the radio that this storm will be unlike anything he has seen there in 40 years. He just got a new roof and HVAC system after waiting for many years.

My sister, a marine scientist, has a business involving toxicology research and is sick with worry about losing power in the metal warehouse rented for the business involving live animals, although they have a gas generator. (But if the roof is gone?...) She & hubby also have a small rental beach box on the Outer Banks (Pamlico Sound) which is nowhere near paid for. So even tho I am just out of the way of the worst of this storm, am having a lot of vicarious worry with these guys and their three locations in the path which may be damaged. And then there are many other friends and relatives in the region too many to follow closely.

Thanks to everyone who cares and is following this historic threat to the east coast.

:scared:

Kick this often.

51. Central NJ
I'm not too worried. There's so much conflicting info. News Channel 12 says downgrading to a tropical storm, MSNBC was cynical, the weather channel said it's water-geddon.

I'll wait until tomorrow to worry about it. I've always had a disaster kit (battery operated radio, candles, back up cell battery) - all my fiance did is go out and get a couple of gallons of water yesterday.

61. no mandatory evac order yet...
I am across the bay from Jones Beach, L.I.

I am hoping to stay and keep an eye on things, especially the boat.

The house is built to the latest codes (completed 2 yrs ago).

We have everything boarded up/tied down and are heading back to Greensboro NC for the weekend. Then back down on Sunday or Monday to access.

Fortunately we are not right on the beach.

Fingers crossed

normal storm by the time it gets to us. (Or better still, it heads out to sea.)

I feel that trains will be shut down sunday and very few people will go to work Monday because of this in New York City, where I work.

62. I think my area of PA has been pretty much taken out of the "cone of uncertainty" in past day.
But I will be sending all you coastal DUers (and extended family who have permanent or vacation condos near Wilmington, NC) good vibes. Stay safe, everyone!

63. She seems to be weakening. No Cat 4 increase
Will be a cat 1 when it hits NC it looks like, maybe a weak cat 2. That is good news. By the time it passes into Virginia it might be a very weak hurricane. Still, the flooding it poses with surge will be the biggest danger in my opinion. It's on target to pass right over my house.

Happy to hear about Irene weakening, and hopefully that continues. Although I'm secretly jealous of all the rain you're getting.

80. I'm northeast of Raleigh, NC
Gusts of wind, varying levels of rain, but no downed trees or wind damage. I'm more concerned about everyone from DC up through the Northeast. Irene might be weakening but it's going to dump a lot of water on some low lying cities.

81. We are in Brooklyn, Park Slope
Since we live half way up the slope (hence the name) we are 2 blocks out of the 3rd level evacuation zone and should be fine. The closing of the subway means I get tomorrow off!!! We have stocked up and are planning on going out for our hurricane brunch in a few hours then back home to settle in for the next day or two.
