Midlands stables to house coastal horses while Irene hits
COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - As people leave the coastal areas ahead of Hurricane Irene, many are taking their horses. Some horse owners in Horry County are heading to the Midlands to wait out the storm.

Stalls at Equine Park are ready for horses from the coast if needed. 70 stalls out of 290 are already booked, a surprise for the park's management.

"Honestly, it's an aspect of the parks operation that we never really thought about," said President of Promotions Laura Shull.

The park is normally used for events, but this weekend it will become a shelter as Hurricane Irene nears the Carolinas. Shull said she started receiving calls this week from people in Horry county about available stalls, folks already familiar with the park's amenities.

Good to know if you have horses, are in area, and need to evac.

All snark aside, good to know.

2. Becuase I posted it... it does not matter what is posted
since I am the poster it will be automatically unrecced.

It is childish, but expected.

The unrec system has a few good things but it is also a tool for bullies, there I said it.

6. After Andrew hit South Florida, a study was done that showed
How many of the horses and other livestock died and how important evacuation was for them, too. It was done by a high school student but was well regarded by many disaster professionals. I have a copy around somewhere.

Aside from the obvious ways they could be injured, many animals died because they sheltered in water filled ditches - getting in the water protects them from wind borne debris and also equalizes the pressure. But in South Florida many ditches border roads as do power lines. When the lines went down, the animals were electrocuted.

We used to be the designated evacuation barn for some of the mounted units in Central Florida. Fortunately they never needed to use our facilities, but they liked knowing where they could go if need be.
