If I was in NYC
If by some chance I was in NYC for this weekend here is what I think I would do:

Plan on taking a week long vacation.

Lay in all the stuff I would need for a week of partying.

Make sure I was roomed in a 2nd to 4th floor building with few windows, or with heavy curtains.

Get work clothes together: Boots, gloves, hats.

Park my car in a upper level garage, on the northwest corner.

Fill every bucket and can with water.

Canned food and a can opener.

Gather all the other stuff they say you need, and plan on taking it easy.

1. no need to fill buckets for water in NYC
Their water supply is gravity fed from reservoirs over 100 miles to the North, in the Catskills. The Aahokan Reservoir is at a considerably higher altitude than is NYC. The whole 100+ year old system was designed long before there was electricity everywhere, so they made sure that it's gravity fed.

3. That's right
What a great system. But water purification runs on the big E. May not be a problem, tho.

Oh yeah, and get some cash out of the ATM.

4. I'm in NYC...
I'm on the 2nd floor of a 5 floor walkup near the top of a hill. My windows are wider than usual with brownstones but I have blinds on them. No car, don't need one. Have canned food and opener although I'd be surprised if we lost power or gas. As above, not worried about my water although tall buildings require electricity to pump water up to the top water towers. I have a windup radio and flashlights, also candles.
Work clothes?

6. Work clothes
Because you may have to do some dirty work helping someone else, or cleaning up a mess.

Really being in a city may not be all that awful as compared to say a low lying suburb. Still, given that wind and water always win, it pays to be ready to deal with failures of the humans who are not able to deal with losing.
