Irene storm track moves west; timing, impact still uncertain
E-mail| Print | Comments () 08/25/2011 6:12 PM

By Martin Finucane, Globe Staff

Torrential rain? Screaming winds? Pounding surf?

Pick your poison.

All are potential impacts in New England being projected by weather forecasting supercomputers as Hurricane Irene whirls toward the East Coast.

With the storm still three days away, computer models are offering varying scenarios for where the storm will make landfall.

But one thing is certain, said Bill Simpson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Taunton.

“We’re not getting out of this without some significant weather one way or the other,” he said. “This is not, like, ‘There it goes! Near miss.’”

multitude of hats worn.

And shared.

ad infinitum.

10. Impact, timing and path are still unknowns. The story says, "weather is coming, stay tuned."
Editors disagree all the time.

11. LOL here's Masters
Irene likely to bring destructive fresh water flooding
In this morning's post, I highlighted the threat from storm surge flooding, but flash flooding and river flooding from Irene's torrential rains are also a huge threat. The hurricane is expected to bring rains in excess of 12" to 100-mile swath from Eastern North Carolina northwards along the coast, through New York City. The danger of fresh water flooding is greatest in northern New Jersey, Southeast Pennsylvania, and Southeast New York, where the soils are saturated from heavy August rains that were among the heaviest on record. At Philadelphia, rainfall so far this August has been 13 inches, not far from the record for rainiest month of all-time, the 15.82" that fell in August 1867. This record will almost certainly be broken when Irene's rains arrive. In general, the heaviest rains will fall along the west side of the hurricane's track, and the greatest wind damage will occur on the east side. Right now, it does not appear that tornadoes will be a major concern, but there will probably be a few weak tornadoes. Hurricane Bob of 1991, the last hurricane to affect New England, spawned six tornadoes, most of them weak F-0 and F-1 twisters.

44. It would be pleasant, enjoyable...
and perhaps more informative than it already is. DU has become a mean place lately.

Thanks for the info. I live 8 hours' drive from my family, and this is making me very nervous. My entire family lives within 10 miles of the ocean, in different parts of NJ. Many of my family members live within 1 mile of either the ocean or the nearly equally dangerous back bays (I grew up in a back bay area of Monmouth County).

16. Yeah, we've had calls from both sets of parents
Telling us to stock up water, batteries, food, etc. Honestly, we're both in our late 40's. We've been through hurricanes before. We had Isabelle come through a couple of years ago and survived. Shit, they're acting like it's the end of the world!

We're well-stocked with water, candles, batteries, food (well, I need to get cat food). We've moved or are moving all of our outdoor stuff inside. We've got our meds in baggies and go-bags. We're already on this.

BTW, I'm in the DC area. Not on the water, nor in a flood zone.

so if you are not concerned in the least, neither am I... to be quite honest.

24. Well, here's my forcast take.
Sure, the track moves to the West, sometimes to the east, and then back to the West. But I know this - Irene is 4 times as wide as the state of Connecticut. So let me say with the utmost of confidence as a Sunday forecast - It Gonna Rain! Sometimes horizontally...
