Sarah Palin brands media's attacks over Arizona shooting as 'blood libel'
Politician breaks silence on Giffords shooting and lambasts opponents with controversial choice of language

Sarah Palin today accused her opponents of manufacturing a "blood libel" by suggesting her rhetoric and campaign tactics had anything to do with the Arizona shootings.

Four days after an incident which left six people dead and critically injured the congresswoman Gabriel Giffords, Palin released a video statement condemning the attack. She denied that a now infamous campaign map showing Giffords' electoral district in the cross hairs of a gun had influenced the shooter Jared Lee Loughner.

In an attack on her accusers, she said: "Journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence they purport to condemn. That is reprehensible."

Palin's bizarre use of language is sure to provoke further controversy – a blood libel refers to the false claim that Jews murder children to use in religious rituals. Giffords is Jewish.

Rather an odd choice of emoticon too, when discussing such serious matters as mass murder and attempted assassination.

1. What an appropriate description for your actions, you quitter: blood libel.
It perfectly describes what you should be charged with.

4. The media sure is plastering her face everywhere
Every site I open there she is staring me in the face.

Are they trying to protect her or make her look that much more un-intelligent, I can't tell.

14. Yeah, that's the puzzle.
Now granted she's an idiot, but that's never been a problem to political advancement.

I'm wondering what the hell are her handlers thinking.

First, don't bite the hand that feeds you. The media made her. Essentially, that's all she has is the media which gives her an outlet and, wink, wink, nudge, nudge, lets her get away with her outrageous words and behavior.

Second, isn't there anyone on her staff who doesn't know and understand what an explosive vile phrase "blood libel" is, its history? Jebus on a tow trailer, the Nazis used it.

but you...well you are not accountable to anyone or anything. Stuff those dollars in your pockets and hit the road.

10. I knew there was a certain connotation to the term,
I had forgotten that it referred to the murder of kids.

Palin is truly in her own universe.

12. surely from her speech writer(s), and she probably didn't ask them what it meant
An extremely loose and ill-advised application of the term, IMO.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blood_libel

Her "for God's sake, don't let her look like an idiot" coaches were a little sloppy on a few other little items in this video. She mispronounced basic terms such as "pundints" for "pundits," "proport" for "purport" and other slips that demonstrate that these aren't her words, but just something that they wrote for her.

17. Thank you for taking one for the team and watching the video so the rest of us don't have to
It's so obvious she doesn't have the intellect to write anything for herself.

Apart from the tweets, of course...

18. There is way too much money behind Palin
than there should be. She is riding on her appeal to NRA supporters and religious conservatives, who have had a tendency to shunt their privately raised church money toward people with the right code talk--but the big money most likely comes from oil. Drill baby drill, remember? These companies are known for their ruthlessness. Oil money is endless and this to me explains why this woman does not disappear from public view, no matter what social transgression she commits.

This is how destructive oil money is. They make most of their money off of war, they are behind nearly every divisive force globally. They are the financial backers of countless loose cannons, and Sarah has played her part well.

We're all going to need refreshers like that if she's really going to run. I personally think she's doomed to failure, but forewarned is forearmed etc etc.

And you're 100% right about the 'Big Oil'/'Big Coal'/MIC ownership of the whole deal.

19. I honestly cannot tell if this is sheer ignorance or coded language being used.
At this point, I don't know why any of the word salad that comes out of her mouth shocks me.

She needs to be thoroughly denounced.

22. They’re Predictable, At Least by John Cole of Balloon Juice
Saw this one coming, too:

As soon as I saw the phrase uttered in the WSJ by the Instapundit and then immediately tweeted by Republican operative Jon Henke, I knew this was the new “beclowned” or “liberal fascism.” Remember, words mean what ever wingnuts want them to mean- that is how it works when you are creating your own reality.
