Obama Administration Fights to Halt Bank Investigations by States
Obama Administration Fights to Halt Bank Investigations by States

In an attempt to please Wall Street, the Obama administration is pressuring state attorneys general to accept a deal being brokered with big banks over their illegal and unethical foreclosure practices.

One AG in particular, New York’s Eric Schneiderman, who assumed office this year, has been urged to come aboard on the agreement still in development which would require banks to pay billions of dollars to help homeowners modify their loans or recover from having lost their properties as a result of aggressive foreclosure actions.

Schneiderman and other attorneys general are balking at the proposed settlement, because, they say, it would handcuff them from going after banks in the future over mortgage-related cases.

The Obama administration, led by Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan and high-level Justice Department officials, also is pressuring those supporting Schneiderman in the fight against banks, namely consumer groups and advocates for borrowers.

For awhile I didn't quite get why you appointed the people that you did to work for you.

I remember my shock the winter of 2008-2009 on discovering that you approved of Paulson, liked Bernanke and wanted Tim Geithner to be down the hall from the Oval Office, where he could help you "understand" the workings of the US Treasury.

But now it is very clear: they don't work for you - you work for them.

9. The mixed message the WH is sending is stirring a lot of anger in the base
The WH has argued they don't want to intervene with labor state fights being waged throughout the nation because they don't want to infringe on states rights. And yet, they are about to interfere with state investigations? There is a lot of bad advisers in the WH at the moment and they are giving bad advice IMVHO.

"You might have been following the latest developments related to the national settlement of the mortgage probe, including this story in today's Huffington Post about our tough fight for a comprehensive resolution to this crisis.

"Let me tell you directly: I am deeply committed to pursuing a full investigation into the misconduct that led to the collapse of America's housing market, and to seeking a resolution that gives homeowners meaningful relief, allows the housing market to begin to recover, and gets our economy moving again.

"Our ongoing investigation into the housing crisis cannot be shut down to accommodate efforts to settle quickly and give banks and others broad immunity from further legal action. If you have any thoughts or concerns about this critical issue, please contact me at 1-800-771-7755, or send a message via Facebook or Twitter."

33. Thanks to AG Schneiderman
"In an attempt to please Wall Street..." seems to be a recurring theme with the Obama admin. The financial rot is much deeper than the $20 billion or so payout being spoken of. The banks know, relatively speaking, that $20 billion is a bargain. AG Schneiderman probably doesn't have to dig far at all, given the pressure he's being put under.

It's curious that the HUD secretary (among others) is leaning on AG Schneiderman. The HUD secretary doesn't move without some tacit White House approval. Frankly, if this "deal"/collaboration is so goddamn wonderful, why would the administration need to lean on anyone? This should be self-evident, right?

Appalling. Again...
