Look what China is building
This is China's New J-20 Fighter

It is an EXACT Copy of America's F-22

1. Your definition of "exact" is somewhat lacking.

Please tell me you aren't an engineer, architect, or contractor.

A hint (back view of F-22)

Another shot

Back of J-20

Notice anything?

F-22 combines vectored thrust giving it almost supernatural agility, a radical tail structure which pulls heat from engines giving it a negligble IR signature from above (a huge advantage in dogfigh, he who locks first wins), and improved aerodynamics to give it super-cruise ability (> Mach 1 without afterburner). Combine that with the lowest radar cross section of anything flying today and one of the most sensitive radars means the F-22 can see and kill you before you even know it is there.

The J-20 has none of that. They are both modern jets that is about all they have in common. Still J-20 is rather impressive for the Chinese. They are making huge leaps in development of arms. The next generation fighter after the J-20 or maybe the one after that is the one we need to worry about.

4. No, it's not.
Much more interestingly, it's not an "exact copy" of anything we're flying, a la the USSR's reverse-engineered Tupolevs.

No, J20 is forward-engineered, combining several clever ideas from much of what is flying today.

6. not an exact copy and good for them
It looks similar as that is the basic stealth design, you can't both fly and avoid radar without this sort of shape. It is however, from my understanding, quite different in its specifications.

And good for them. The planet needs at least two other well armed military powers with sufficient economic strength as a counter to our planetary thuggery. We will not be so cavalier about killing if retaliation is a reality.

11. North Korea is run by a crazy totalitarian but he is their crazy totalitarian.
China likes that NK keeps the US off balance. It is a destabilizing influence and that benefits China. If NK ever became beligerent to China they would be annihilation in a Hong Kong minute.

13. The Chinese make great scale models - not so great combat aircraft.
Edited on Wed Jan-12-11 09:12 AM by leveymg
The J-10 was touted as China's cheaper answer to the F-16, and it's equal. It isn't.

The J-20 may look like a cross between a F-22 and a F-35, with a bit of Eurofighter thrown in (the forward Canard wing) but what makes stealth work isn't really the shape and the serrated shut-lines (even though those contribute, somewhat to making it a less reflective surface) - it's the avionics and electronic counter-measures, which are extraordinarily sophisticated, expensive, and closely-guarded. Also, there's no vectored thrust, which gives the F-22 extraordinary maneuverability in air combat (up-down, side-to-side, near-hover). Without those features, it's just another big model airplane.

Great for scaring the ignorant into spending more for a new generation of "stealthy" aircraft they don't really need to maintain air supremacy, though. This is great marketing for the F-35, which is a real under-performer, and great for prodding more defense spending by a country that has to borrow from China to build them.

Enjoy, kiddies. Don't fly it near Mr. Jennings house - he complained about the noise last time. Dinner's at 7:00.
