Where are the Peace Activists?
http://www.jsonline.com/news/opinion/128213748.html

This Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel editorial asks why Milwaukee's longstanding peace activists are not visible.

..snip..

You know the ones. The folks who stood outside the Federal Building downtown or Army recruiting centers chanting slogans about "No more Cheney oil wars!" The loyal groups on the corner of Locust and Oakland every weekend carrying signs accusing George W. Bush of being a cowboy and denouncing his two "illegal wars." The young volunteers who came to my door almost weekly to ask for a signature on a petition and a contribution to continue their work of getting "the truth out about the real reason we are fighting these wars."

How I wish those young volunteers were at my door now. At least they have an actual "truth" they could be revealing! And it's not over yet. The White House, through Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has started to saber-rattle in the direction of Syria.

Yet day after day, the activists are silent. Perhaps the change they hoped for was one of withdrawal and they became disillusioned as their guy dragged us into more and more conflicts, so they just gave up.

I would hate to think it's because they only care when an elephant is sending in troops and are content to look the other way when a donkey is braying orders.

..end..

The comments section is predictably depressing, JSOnline blogs having been taken over by RW knuckle-draggers in the last seven months.

1. This government did not make up lies about WMDs &tell us we are about to be attacked
At the nexus of hyperbole and bullshit:

4. Ummm, Gary? There's a plank in your eye...
If you want to call peace activists hypocritical, let's hear about your own anti-war activism under Bush.....

5. Free speech zones, police overreaction, and fucked up protests killed/are killing the vocal peace
The protesters were only permitted to gather fifteen miles away from the convention center...
One guy throws a brick at the cops and they start in with tear gas...
You're marching in an Anti War rally, but there's a guy holding a "Free Mumia (sp)" sign and a vegan holding a giant picture of a veal calf being slaughtered...
Even when you protest with an organized group of hundreds or thousands, you get no notice...
9/11 changed everything. Why do you hate America...
Hey he's a Democratic President, who knew we'd still be protesting this shit...

These killed the "peace movement"

We're still Anti War.

8. So, did the J/S make a habit of noticing the activists when they were there?
And what was the tone of their reporting? Because I will take a big, fat guess that it was condescending in the extreme. What do I win if I'm totally right?
