Forecasters shifted the bull's-eye of Hurricane Irene northward to the Grand Strand on Monday, and emergency officials along the Carolinas coast began preparing for what could be the first hit by a major hurricane in seven years.
The day began with National Hurricane Center meteorologists predicting Irene would make landfall in south Florida. But later computer models seemed to be reaching a consensus - the hurricane and its predicted 115 mph winds are headed for the S.C. coast.
"Hurricanes are unpredictable, but this current track takes it in our direction, so everyone should take it very seriously," said Charleston Mayor Joseph Riley Jr., who was mayor when Hurricane Hugo and its 135 mph winds struck in 1989.
