12. It was projected to intensify to Cat 4 by Thursday evening.
About the time it gets closest to Miami.

A lot of warm water, and flat terrain to cross. And ideal conditions for intensification.

5. That thing keeps swinging higher up the coast.
It looked like it was a Georgia-SC storm. Now it looks like a SC-NC storm. Hopefully it doesn't turn for NY.

13. Not panicing, just preparing.
I'm in Florida. But fortunately, Tampa Bay was moved out of the cone of probability this evening.

We'll probably just get some heavy thunderstorms.

25. All of FL now out of 'the cone of death'
...or so they say

11AM EDT 23 August 2011 Update

Hurricane Warnings are now up for all of the Bahamas. The forecast track shifted very very slightly to the east, but it is mostly an extension of the 5AM official forecast.

Florida is also now out of the cone of uncertainty

11. I'm still traumatized from Ike in Houston in 2008.
Mostly wind, not much rain.

We need the rain.

20. My dad lives near the path... I'm giving him a call today!
He's a bit inland so he is generally OK as long as it isn't a direct hit. He area was hit hard by hurricane Floyd though - so he's definitely in the danger zone.

23. If that thing moves a few clicks east, it could be even worse.
If it rides right up the coast, above the Gulf Stream, it could be worse, skirting the entire east cost with Cat 3, then 2, then 1 winds right on up into New England. The coast would degrade the west side of the storm, but it would regenerate itself from the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. This scenario has been discussed before.
