Hot cow count in Fukushima rises to 12 (Japan)

FUKUSHIMA — The number of cesium-tainted cows raised in Fukushima Prefecture has reached 12 after three more were detected Sunday, prefectural officials said.

On Friday, it was reported that cesium concentrations over the government's provisional safety limit of 500 becquerels per kilogram were detected in beef from four cows raised on a farm in Namie, which is about 10 km from the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant. The prefecture then said that highly contaminated beef from an additional five cows from the farm was discovered Saturday.

The health ministry also said Friday that one of the nine cows found with excessive cesium levels was shipped in April from a farm in the outer ring of the hot zone around the stricken plant. The outer ring is 20 to 30 km away from the plant.

The farm was quoted as saying that the cow had not been fed any rice straw, ministry officials said Saturday. The finding prompted the central government to leave the ban on cattle shipments from Fukushima Prefecture in place on Friday
