Cameron warned over human rights

from the Independent UK:

David Cameron was today warned by senior Liberal Democrats not to try to "water down" Britain's commitment to human rights in the wake of the riots.

The Prime Minister said he wanted a fightback against "the wrong-headed ideas, bureaucratic nonsense and destructive culture" which had led to the disturbances, including the "twisting and misrepresenting of human rights".

Writing in the Sunday Express, Mr Cameron said that he was prepared, if necessary, to take on "parts of the establishment" in order to get to grips with the issue.

However former Lib Dem leader Sir Menzies Campbell made clear he faced a fight with his coalition partners if he tried to tamper with the principles of the Human Rights Act which enshrines the European Convention on Human Rights in UK law. ..........(more)

1. The Human Rights issue is getting out of hand anyway
Edited on Sun Aug-21-11 07:50 AM by dipsydoodle
way beyond its original intent.

Aside from the subject of our homegrown hooligans - see here from today :

A leading human rights lawyer is planning a legal challenge to Scotland's university funding system.

Phil Shiner said the policy breaches the European Convention on Human Rights by charging students from other parts of the UK to study north of the border.

Scottish students studying at home do not pay tuition fees while some 22,000 English students in Scotland do.

The Scottish government has defended its policy and says it is acting within the law.

I'm beginning to wonder if I could claim my human rights have been breached every the shop up the road runs out of Chocolate Raisins.

2. It does look a lot like discrimination based on nationality, though
As the BBC article points out, "under EU rules, students coming to Scotland from other European countries have to be treated in the same way as Scottish students". But they make UK non-Scottish students pay fees. The Scottish Executive is trying to get that changed so that all EU non-Scottish students have to pay, but at the moment it seems it's discrimination to me.
