Animal hoarding?????
Edited on Sat Aug-20-11 12:59 PM by MoonRiver
Watching the tv program on this subject, which is one of my fav shows. It continues to amaze me how people who allegedly so love their pets, can allow them to become sick and die through neglect. I know it is a form of OCD but, still, it seems one would notice how much their animals are suffering, not to mention how the squalid conditions these people live in, due to the animals, are affecting their physical and mental health.

1. The hoarding mentality prevents them from noticing it.
The human brain is good at denying reality when it wants to do so.

2. sigh...
I have neighbors like this right now, she's hoarding cats outside in a bunch of little cages inside of dog kennel. The family used to raise dogs in these kennels, sold them all off and it's been animal free (except for 1 dog) for months. Looks like their mother moved in and she's the one with the cat problem.

Got some advice from some FB friends on what to do but besides reporting it to tv news or a newspaper, there's not much I can do. No animal control here.

They're not friendly people (Teabaggers) and I don't even feel comfortable knocking on their door to even ask if the old woman needs anything.

5. Do you know this for a fact based on experience?
Perhaps it would be best to make an attempt at resolution without getting politics involved whatsoever for the good of everyone...

7. I have some photos
but they're not perfect, I'm limited by the zoom on my camera. They put up a tarp to keep us and cars passing by from seeing what's behind the fence. On the street that faces the side of their house, I noticed no tarp probably because the neighbor's house doesn't face it. What I saw were a number of small cages stacked ontop of each other inside the dog kennel. Tarp is on the top. There are cats in there - at least 10-15 cages.

Animal control in my county will not come out for this.

8. The county has zoning issues you might use in this case--you have to
have a kennel license to keep a certain number of animals, for example.

13. That's a good idea
at least it's a sneaky way of doing it without letting any know my identity.

It's still considered rural here - chickens, pigs, horses whatever can be kept in your backyard but not sure about any limits. They have about 4-5 acres, over 2 is considered a farm. Just thinking outloud..........

Good suggestion, thanks!

17. They only deal with critters on the reservation.
There's a no kill shelter hear but honestly, those cats are probably better off where they are then at that place.

ASPCA may work and from what Twilight says, they'll also be anonymous (I'll be double checking on that) but that may be the only option I have.

11. I have a neighbor who is a teabagger.
He flies that hideous Gadsen flag in his front yard and puts stupid signs up like "US OUT OF UN" and "Ron Paul for President". And he has Obama hater bumper stickers on his cars.

Never met him (nor do I want to) but I can sure tell he's a teabagger.

15. Man these people are a mess.
Edited on Sat Aug-20-11 01:31 PM by nc4bo
It's an older woman with 1 or 2 older kids, brother is there with his kid, I think one of the son's has a kid, the brother has throat cancer and uses a scooter to get around and probably gets some kind of assistance but I'm not sure. Now the older woman's mom moved in.

In '08 they kept their Mccain/Palin signs up until they rotted.

Willing to bet the farm they call us niggers. We've been here 5 years. They don't wave (saying something for southern peeps).

6. Call the local Humane Society or ASPCA, tell them you are concerned about
the condition the cats are kept under.

9. That was one suggestion
but I'm also very concerned that they might tell these people who called them. I don't want these people to have a clue it was me.

12. They won't tell, at least not in my experience. They keep it anonymous.
One of my neighbors once called the city to complain about one of my cats pooping in their yard. I asked which neighbor, they wouldn't tell me--and this was in my rinky-dink little town where everybody knows everybody. I wouldn't worry about that.

3. It's a hard show to watch. I don't think it's a matter of love, it's a
matter of gratification. Probably a sense of being a "rescuer", feeding their sense of self-importance. Seems to be the most common theme.

4. The US government is guilty of this - but with its own citizens - especially during economic
recessions

strikes

protests

disasters like Katrina

national political conventions

G20 summits

elections

14. When they look at a room or an animals they do not see what you do
These people are in dire need of mental health intervention yet our laws prevent getting them treatment unless they agree to it. Many do not know they are sick.

16. We let people get sick and die all the time. Until we can show the respect
for each other that we say we want for animals, the animals have no chance.

There was enough money to turn these tragedies into freak shows, but not enough to maybe get a little help in there? Or maybe there is no money until they can get people advertising their wares - the freak show is just a vehicle.

Maybe we don't have to cut social security after all. Maybe we can do a reality show where we watch grandma burning newspaper in her electric stove because she couldn't afford electricity.

That oughta bring in a few million...

18. People hoard all kinds of stuff....
Edited on Sat Aug-20-11 02:31 PM by Historic NY
I know one person that buys stuff that they never used....even have gone so far as to pay for a storage unit to put the stuff in. I have a relative who lives in a condo that you can't get into. A retired teacher no less....

I have another guy that hoards cars, buys and buys 100's of them but they are all decaying because he can't restore them all or store them properly...a fool & his money so easily separated. shame some nice stuff....maybe I shook him up. I recently told him I'm coming off a 5yr restoration and I don't have neither the time or the will to spend another 5 yrs just doing one car. I'll be getting to the point that I will be too old to enjoy them....it did elicit a reaction.

AS for the Teaclangers I had to check where your from we had some people with the same signs all over their yard...they finally rotted and they have put up a 8ft high stockard fence. I think they are closing themselves off.

If they are collecting that many animals you might want to try the board of health.

It a sickness...I like to have a money hoarding problem myself. :-)

19. Most places in the US only allow 5 cats and 5 dogs (maximum) per dwelling.
I'd check with the ASPCA, call from a payphone and don't give your name.

20. If we're talking about the same show
I wanted to throw her in a cage. I have compassion for those that suffer with a mental illness but I shelved that when I saw what she did to those dogs and cats. And she gets to keep 9 animals.
:wtf:

If I just 'hint' at doing harm to myself my therapist has the sheriff pounding on my door. This woman is killing innocent animals. Her kids were enabling her. Sad.

Still want to throw her in a cage and let her rot away since everyone in her family seems reluctant to help her.

Her son and I graduated from high school together. It's really sad, knowing what she's turned into.

Doesn't realize the damage they are doing to the animals.
