I would totally flunk Melissa Harris Perry's class.
She said she has her students reading Sarah Palin's autobiography. I just couldn't do it. x(

4. Your attitude is as unacceptable as the students in my govt. class
who don't want to do the critical thinking project that requires them to read and assess Olberman's piece on Perry (I'm in Texas BTW).

Anybody in my class who feels that my assignments are not worthy of their time is free to drop the class and. If they are intent on making an issue of it (which is disrespctful of the instructor and the class) they won't have to ask for the drop.

8. I guess my biggest objection to reading Palin's book . . .
Would be buying it for the class, thereby putting my money in her pocket. I just couldn't stomach that.

16. Exactly. We shouldn't encourage the ignorant to write books.
I wouldn't want to give the idiot a dime of my or my school's money. Now if they bought ONE book and passed it around all year I might go for that.

5. One of the most liberal profs I knew...
who at one point was president of the union for University Profs, (can't remember what it's called) made all of his students read a variety of stuff on Reagan. It taught them how to pull apart an argument.

My students are forced to think critically about arguments, and present their opinions so that their classmates may learn how to present arguments and facts soundly.
There's a lot of stuff I've hated reading, but I do it because it sharpens my skills.

6. Melissa HP is brilliant...
and having students read the grifter's 'autobiography', fiction tho it be,
is paving the way for future progressives...
to read it in context of other books, to have to plow your way thru
the crap is to see it for what it is.
When you must read a book, along with other comparative material
you can separate the wheat from the chaff.. but I doubt that Palin's
book even qualifies as chaff.

She would be a challenging teacher, and she'd expect the class to
'kick it up a notch'... and of course, the class rises to the occasion.

13. I respect MHP, but I can see absolutely no value in having students read that...
First of all, her books are all ghost-written and ignoring her penchance for a lie when the truth is just as easy, Palin appeared not to even know what was in the book when she was interviewed.

I can see having academic discussions of Palin, in terms of women in politics, but I would have to argue strenuously with MHP. In fact, I think I've lost a little respect for her having just heard that she is doing this in her class.

I'm all for pushing buttons and being provocative in academics, but SP's fake autobiography? Really? :eyes:

20. Oh, I could
With red pen in hand. Assuming she wrote any of it, and that's highly doubtful, it will be so full of dangling participles and idiotic non-sequitors, I think it would be a busy, busy book.
