South Carolina governor: Perry will be strong contender in her state

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley championed fellow Republican and presidential newcomer Rick Perry on Friday, describing Texas as the example of “everything you do right.”

Haley, her state’s first female governor, declined to endorse Perry or anyone else in the crowded race for the GOP presidential nomination.

But she made it clear during her speech to the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth — and in an interview later — that Perry would be a contender in South Carolina, a key primary state.

“He just understands that the federal government’s role is to stay out of the way,” she said. “That is something that resonates strongly in South Carolina.”

During her nearly 30-minute talk, Haley sometimes seemed to be reciting Perry’s stump speech.

She roundly criticized the federal government. She touted the importance of job creation and the economy.

She even offered her version of the oft-made comparison between Texas and California.

“Texas is everything you do right,” Haley said. “California is what not to do.”

She predicted Texas’ economic standing would be a strong selling point for Perry.

“People love the business side of him and that he’s always been great at job recruitment,” she said.

Haley tamped down speculation that she might become a vice presidential candidate, saying she has no interest.

5. Thanks for the sympathy
Unfortunately, Haley is right. My friends & neighbors here in upstate SC are cooing over Bachmann & Perry. I've noticed a trend amongst my acquaintances: the females are gushing over Bachmann, the men are loving that straight-shootin' Perry.

People glaze over completely if you try to talk to them about the historically cruddy economic record for Repub administrations vs. Democratic ones. Or try to discuss Bachmann's lunacy. Or Perry's awful record in Texas. Or how much bigger the gov seems to get under Repubs for the supposedly "small gov" party. Or any issue, really, that is even partially indicative of good governance.

These people are going to vote for the guy/gal who is anti-tax, anti-choice, anti-gay, pro putting god back in the classroom, non-"elitist," & most importantly, non-black... even if unemployment were to disappear by Nov 2012 and it were discovered that voting for President Obama cured cancer.

We Democrats are very few & far between in these parts, and are used to being a minority. But it's gotten seriously nasty around here since 2008 and most days I wish we could move.
