What's really going on when they "card" you nowadays?
I had gone like a decade without getting "carded," when buying alcoholic beverages.

I got used to being old enough to not to have to show them my license.

It sucked to be getting old, but at least I didn't have to dig through my wallet to find my id anymore.

And when I neglect to shave, my whiskers are now gray, not that I'm that terribly old.

But they've started to ask for my identification again, when I buy some beer.

And when they do, they don't just "eyeball" it. They "scan" it.

Anyone know what's going on? Why are they doing that? What information are they scanning? What information are they saving?

Anyone know what is going on?

6. Many of the scanners dint allow the sale to proceed without swiping ur ID.
And it helps that a young kid isn't selling to their friends or that a young kid isn't having to guess at one's age; everyone gets scanned. No descrimination at all then.

3. I think it is just that they want to cover their ass.
When I was in my mid 30's (20 or so years ago) I was carded when I went to a club in New Orleans or maybe it was in Austin, Texas.
I was shocked that they wanted to see my ID.
They said that it had nothing to do with 'age' it had to do with the fact that if they got raided they wanted everyone in the club to be able to show the cops their ID.

Nowadays many gas stations, liquor stores, etc are getting fined for selling alcohol and cigarettes to minors that they are just taking extra precautions to show that they are following the letter of the law.
It sucks but I can see their point in doing so.

8. If I sell to an underage person, I get
7 days in jail, $250 fine and lose my job.

I was asked a few weeks ago for my license when I was buying a can of beer. I'm 62. The kid didn't scan it, but checked the date.

9. I've made up my mind
I'm not going to let them scan my license anymore.

They can look at it, but they will not scan it with their wands anymore.

12. It just verifies your age.
That way tired, careless, or math-illiterate cashiers don't accidentally screw up and end up costing the store big bucks in a fine.

13. In half the stores where I shop, they don't even check my ID
For those of us who are obviously over 21, they just plug in a date without asking. I have only had my license scanned maybe twice in the past year. And, they only asked to see the date a handful of times during that period. I assume they check the IDs of younger customers. Granted, I buy all of my beer and wine at the grocery stores. It's probably not where under-aged drinkers tend to make their purchase attempts.

14. Happens to me in airports and at football games
I'm 61 and the explanation is that they card everyone. My wife actually enjoys being carded again., but don't tell her they're doing it to everyone.

Funny anecdote: A number of years ago, my brother, who lost his hair on top at an early age, was buying beer at Giants Stadium and they asked him for ID. He just took his hat off - they laughed, said good enough and served him.

15. Registers now routinely "lock-up" until the card is slid
Edited on Sun Aug-14-11 07:15 AM by SoCalDem
It's much like when clerks at McDonalds no longer have to hold the soft drink lever..the machine does it all..

The software protects the checkers from accidentally selling to a minor, and shows that every purchase will be "carded", so minors learn not to go there...and if a fake ID is used it may also reject the purchase:shrug:

What I mind the most is Radio Shack's insane policy of asking for name address phone number for insignificant purchases like batteries..:eyes:

They tried that on me & I walked away..don;t need batteries that badly:)

The manager can verify your age and complete the purchase without a scan.

to pass on us obviously over-21 group. They have to keep those check stands moving quickly.

Don't know if it is state law of just 'company policy'.
