Prairie populist George McGovern, the 1972 Democratic nominee, celebrated his 89th birthday recently by racing a sprint car at the local speedway for hungry kids. Video clip here:

7. Exiled leaders abound in the party: See Eugene McCarthy and Gary Hart.

Gary Hart has been kept in the shadows since he had to enter the '88 convention with press credentials. Hart gave Bill Clinton his start in politics managing the McGovern campaign in Texas and Arkansas in '72 but that received no mention at all in his memoirs.

McCarthy paid a price for thumbing his nose at the party establishment in '68, '76, and '80, but he was a true liberal on the big issues of war and peace and addressing unemployment.

I have always found what McCarthy, McGovern and Hart had to say to be interesting and usually enlightening. Yet, their comments were hard to find since they were frequently excluded by the MSM from the political discussions of the day on important issues in the years after their initial success.

Wait, wiki says he was born on July 19th, so this story must be a month old and thus not at Fair time, unless he celebrates his birthday late or something.
