Chinese workers could replace Mexican immigrants

Until now, Mexico has supplied the United States, especially Texas and California, with immigrant workers to fill low-wage jobs. That's about to change, in the wake of an unprecedented decline in Mexican immigration and a new influx of Chinese immigrant workers who will be fleeing hopeless conditions in China; many of them will enter the U.S. undocumented.

These developments will cast in sharp relief the inherent contradictions in the practices comprising our current immigration policy. These immigrants from China will likely galvanize support from millions of Chinese-Americans to rationalize the policy once and for all.

Mexican immigration — legal and undocumented - now stands at an all-time low and may have even stopped. "For the first time in 60 years, the net traffic has gone to zero and is probably a little bit negative," according to Princeton's Douglas Massey, who co-directs the Mexican Migration Project. Also, a report by Mexico's National Statistics Institute noted recently that "in the first quarter of 2011, … the net migration balance was almost nothing." Mexico is now in the process of reversing its century-old status of being a net exporter of migrants.

2. They also contributed greatly to the gold mining industry and to building levees in the Delta...
Reclaiming thousands of acres of former tidal wetlands in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta areas, thus creating some of the richest farmland anywhere on earth.

Not that this was a good thing for wildlife, mind you.

Below, the town of Locke on a levee in the heart of the California Delta:

4. "..... fleeing hopeless conditions in China"
But China's economy is a modern miracle according to the talking heads on TV, what happened?

Couldnt they make new lives for themselves in those brand new empty cities the Chinese government keeps building?

5. A little buzz for the remake of "Red Dawn", perhaps?
Edited on Sat Aug-13-11 12:47 PM by leveymg
Principal photography began September 2009 in Mount Clemens, Michigan.<11> According to photographs taken on set, the film features propaganda pamphlets, posters and banners featuring People's Liberation Army symbols, such as the August 1 star. The posters, which are designed to be satirical in nature, attempt to garner support for a Chinese occupation, with slogans such as "Rebuilding Your Reputation", "Repairing Your Economy", and "Fighting Corporate Corruption."<12><13>

In June 2010, release of the film was delayed due to MGM’s financial difficulties. The delay came amid growing controversy in China after excerpts of the script were leaked on the website The Awl. The film drew sharp criticism from the Global Times, one of the leading Chinese state-run newspapers, with headlines such as "U.S. reshoots Cold War movie to demonize China" and "American movie plants hostile seeds against China". One of the articles stated: "China can still feel U.S. distrust and fear, especially among its people. Americans’ suspicions about China are the best ground for the hawks to disseminate fear and doubt, which is the biggest concern with the movie, Red Dawn".<14><15>

In January 2011, the first cast photo was released along with news that MGM will release the film once their Chapter 11 restructuring is completed. Red Dawn is one of three already completed MGM projects scheduled to be released in 2011.<3>
