To the whiner in chief -We need you to get mad and stand up for us.

The whiner in chief
bymsopine

.......... - - get over yourself already! There is never going to be the political will in Washington to do all the things you promised in your campaign, and the Republicans are never going to play nice no matter how many pretty, shiny objects you give them. In the immortal words of George Bush the First, "READ MY LIPS - No political will, no nice Republicans".

So would you please stop whining about what isn't and start trying to get a grip on what is? You are a smart, capable, thoughtful man who should be able to figure out that when one approach isn't working, you try something else. In fact, I believe it was you during your campaign who repeatedly pronounced that only a fool would keep doing the same wrong thing and expect different results.

You've been reasonable, you've been conciliatory, you've compromised and you've kept your composure. Not only hasn't it worked, your "can't we all just get along" philosophy has put this country in worse financial peril than ever before. It is long past time for you to stop regretfully bemoaning the lack of civility in Washington and become one of the uncivil. Oh, I don't mean calling names, denigrating birthrights, or questioning love of country and god. That level of incivility is best left to the Republicans. I mean the kind of uncivil that allows you to take a position that is diametrically opposed to the Republican position and then actually sticking to it. I'm talking about defining your own agenda instead of always acting and reacting to the agenda set by the Republicans. In short I'm begging for the kind of uncivil that makes you a leader instead of a negotiator, and I mean this in the most positive way, a piss-poor negotiator at that.

We don't need your sorrowful analysis after each failed policy debacle. We need you to get mad and stand up for yourself. Well, that's not quite right. We need you to get mad and stand up for us.

8. I voted for Obama both in the primary and general election...
Edited on Mon Aug-08-11 04:53 PM by Born Free
However, these days I wished we had chosen Hillary Clinton , I believe she would have the intestinal fortitude to stand up to the GOP on behalf of the middle class. Almost ever day I grow more disappointed with Obama and his lack of will to fight. He allows the GOP to walk all over him and then cries about it afterwards, I can not help but wonder if there is a point where l he will stand up for America.

ON Edit: Please, Al Gore, Hillary Clinton , any good democrat, please challenge Obama in the primary, give us a chance to change course, Obama may be a nice guy but he is no leader

17. I supported Hillary because I knew she would go to war with republicans
and do everything possible to get a democratic agenda through. Obama is not a fighter and he never has been.

During the primaries, Obama supporters would argue with me that Obama would change the tone in Washington and have republicans and democrats working together in a post-partisan fantasy land. I was shocked that so many democrats believed that fairy tale. It was horrifying to see otherwise rational democrats telling me that Bill and Hillary Clinton were the reason the 90's were so politically polarized, instead of the republicans who forced gov't shutdowns and investigated Bill Clinton for 8 years.

During the primaries, Hillary Clinton argued that you couldn't negotiate with republicans and you had to battle them. She said Obama would try to negotiate and they would whittle away all of the democratic demands until we were left with nothing. She was right. The truth is that republicans don't work with democratic presidents. They only work to destroy them. It was like democrats had developed amnesia and forgot what republicans were all about. And they had the nerve to call me a low-information voter. Hmph.

This situation with Obama was not hard to predict, and democrats shouldn't be surprised at how things are turning out. You are very honest to say you realize now that Hillary was a better candidate. Many democrats refuse to acknowledge it.

I should've known better. She would've been more likely to fight to put her campaign platform into law - even if the platform, and of course the branding and image, was slightly more right-wing.

Essentially, Obama is following the same line that Bill and Hillary followed.

It leads nowhere as we now see.

Panetta among others is a Clinton man.

Hillary would be the same old, same old. We need a really fresh point of view.

I am not sure that President Obama is letting republicans walk over him as much as he is allowing republicans to crystallize how radical they are in voters eyes. Bin laden was warm and cozy before he got turned into fish food.

44. When legislation depended upon the vote of Ben Nelson.
Democrats from January 2009 thru 2010 there were no victories. President Obama needs a super majority in the House and Senate like FDR had. Then people like Ben Nelson and blue dogs that vote with republicans at crunch time can be told to fuck off, we don't need their votes to enact progressive legislation. Now, my question to you and people that think like you is, will you sit at home this time around, or will you help democrats get those super majorities that FDR had?

The point you obama toadies don't get is that the man is incapable of leading and he's not a liberal. He could have had unanimous majorities and we'd still have gotten what we got. He doesn't actually believe in liberal/progressive principles. He will fight for them because he's incapable and because he's not a believer in those policies.

83. He could darn well use the bully pulpit
to squarely blame Rethugs for the economic disaster that they have perpetrated on this country. He could plainly tell Americans that the 20% (or probably more) decline in the value of their 401ks and retirement investments in the last two weeks is the free markets opinion of the horeshit "austerity" and deficit reduction budget that the Dumbpublicans forced on him. He could use executive orders to put money into the hands of people that will HAVE to spend it (not Geithner's Wall St. bankers clique) and really put some stimulus into the works. He could tell people that because he was forced by the Rethugs congress to give Cry Baby Bohner 98% of what he wanted 98% of Americans are screwed. He could start listening to Phd'd economists instead of Geithner and that other GE jerk he appointed (what's his name?). Democrats are completely right to talk of dumping him. There is little time left for him to get right (left?) before the 2012 elections.

We all saw Obama's ability to move crowds with the magic of his oratory fortitude during the primaries. His brushing off the shoulders gesture. His (much criticized) statement that "If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun".

He SOUNDED like a fighter. In fact he even sounded tougher than Hillary. That's what Democrats voted for...someone who would finally stand up to the Rethugs lies and corruption and call them out. Hillary seemed just a little too close to her "colleagues on the other side".

He is not, sadly, the transformative progressive leader many here had been fooled into believing in, but he is not particularly evil either, he is simply your standard opportunistic politician who holds no real deep seated principles. During those first few months when the RW racists, birthers, and other loonies were embarrassing themselves and America in general, his advisers advised him that this was the time he could steal some of the moderate/right votes to already start to set up his re-election by doing a 180 and do the opposite of all the things he was being accused daily on FOX News of being, even if it meant turning his back on his primary promises both real and implied.

Socialist?.....He states that the Public Option is not that important and scoffs at the idea of Single Payer. And lately offering up Medicare, Medicaid, and SS in his now almost expected negotiating strategy of offering more than he needs to at the get go.

Civil Libertarian?....Allow renewal of Patriot Act, arrest without warrants, wiretapping, and then go even further in giving carte blanche to the "dark side" as Cheney put it. And of course lets all just "look forward" instead of dealing with unprecedented lawlessness and War Crimes of the Bush regime

Peacenik?....Intensify the war with Afghanistan, not a quick final surge as was implied, but an unending strategy even after Bin Laden was found in Pakistan. And also keep a substantial amount of combat troops in Iraq (no matter what he calls them) and start a new war with Libya.

Anti-Capitalist?....Puts in charge the same people that got America into a meltdown and making sure that NO ONE at the top responsible for abusing the system that led to the crash is prosecuted or made to suffer in any way.

Anti-rich?....Let the Bush Tax cuts for the wealthy continue with no real fight.

Some appologists will say that for some of these he HAD to compromise to get what little he did. The point though is that he never even put up a fight! He could have used the bully pulpit to rally the American public on most of these issues to have his back. Then when the Rethugs demanded compromise, he could have held out longer and then at the very end threw THEM a small bone in order to save them a bit of face.

Obama is not even getting bones. Too bad because he needs one, right in the back.

148. Obama is a politician by profession.
His goal is to be elected, and beyond that, he doesn't have the desire to lead, since he hasn't the convictions to stand for anything. He only thinks in terms of the next election, which at this time is the 2012 presidential election. I had great hopes for him, since he is the smartest man in the room, and has the ability, not the desire, to be a commanding Democratic president.

I am not debating this in Democratic Underground.

He had the most significant legislative first two years in generations - he got HCR done, which presidents have tried and failed to do for nearly 50 years. He got finance reform done. He has dealt with his two security threats masterfully (the somolian pirates and OBL) and has been the best president in modern times on trying to secure our borders. His presidency staved off the largest loss of jobs since the great depression and a recession, and has us on a recovery - halting and sluglike as it may be.

Sad thing is, I just had to lay out to a fricken democrat, presumably, what I have laid out countless times to teabag types.

The democratic party may not be as actively liberal/progressive as WE might like.

But, it is a FAR cry from where the republican party is. Just simple minded hyperbolic nonsense to say they are the same.

It is not even close, and this kind of simpering BS is what is going to let more republicans get elected than there should be.

BO is not NEAR as bad as the fringe wants to make him out to be at this point.

157. I'll counter your rec and remind of what you can't figure out-
The most patriotic THING a blogger or person can DO at this point is to be absolutely clear in what they want a potential leader like Barack Obama to do.

Fuck anybody who see this as "insulting"... It's the BEST and more HONEST thing an American could do. We are all waiting for him to be the person he wanted to be anyway, and not a fucking whiner, which is exactly what he is now.

Put up.

4. Your right! Obama appearing angry on television will solve things!
Edited on Mon Aug-08-11 04:34 PM by Recursion
Republican Representatives and Senators will realize the error of their ways and stop blocking good legislation and passing bad legislation. The business community will start hiring on the faith that their hiring will increase demand. The Bush tax cuts will be repealed a year and a half ahead of schedule. The Federal deficit will disappear. Republican governors will stop busting unions. Americans will stop using illegal drugs. The Taliban will put down their weapons and forge a peaceful Democracy with the Tajiks and Turkmen. Netanyahu will stop building settlements in the West Bank. Large corporations will divest themselves of their media holdings, ushering in a new wave of responsible journalism and quality entertainment. Monsanto will withdraw their untested GMO crops. Aggrieved middle age marginally employed white males will stop resenting government policies that help minorities and women.

Just think... we could have all of these things, if only Barack Obama would get angry.

96. Anger without facts is just anger
Anger with facts is a movement .........
Personally I would not mind having an angry black man on my side .......
An angry black man might just scare a lot of republicans because they are afraid of the blacks ........

Anger can be a much more powerful emotion than love ........ and they are opposites

Instead of whining about Obama (as the author does) and making demands like a petulant child, why don't WE (collectively, as Americans) get up off our lazy asses and DO something?

We are all in this together and the slogan was "Yes we can" not "Yes he can, for us".

The little bit of financial reform we got? Obama, yes, Mittens, no.

Gitmo? Bagram? Afghanistan? Iraq? Too big to fail? Glass-Steagall? A health-care insurance mandate (a mittens idea)? Warrantless wireptapping? Indefinite detention? Whistleblower prosecutions? Drone attacks? Geithner, Summers and Rubin? No prosecutions of George Bush, et al.?

"It could be worse" is not a defense.

He is not weak. He is not overwhelmed.

He believes in what he is doing. He WANTS to cut Medicare, and he WANTS to keep military spending.

He is a Third Way Democrat, and his goals for the economy and the wars are pretty much identical to those of the Republicans.

25. I stand ready again to help with 2012, just not for him
I spent a lot of time, money, and effort to help Barack get elected in 2008, and I am sure most of the people posting here did as well. So I want the haters to stop getting mad at us when we don't see Obama doing what we fought so hard to elect him for. Each of us fought for Obama in '08 in our own ways and so we have the right to be upset with this lame-foot approach to tackling the GOP. In retrospect I guess I should have helped Hillary with her campaign instead, but I figured the damn GOP would just turn her into a whimpering claw-less complainer for the middle class instead of our hero like they did to Barack. I would never have figured he would have been so castrated by the GOP in such a short period of time. This is disgusting to watch everyday and if he won't rise up and use his bully pulpit to move Washington for us then we have to move him along and get some fresh blood in the whitehouse before we are stuck with Palin, or worse....

I worked for him too although I had my doubts from the get-go, because the alternative was, and is, so much worse (and will therefore have to disgustedly vote for him again for the same reason). I get as sick of the pointing out his failures as "bashing" as I did when pointing out the lies and crimes of the Bush Junta was labeled "bashing" from our enemies on the right.

Every damn thing does not need to be posted here just 'cause it's "out there" on the Internet. I've seen shit from GOP.com and borderline white supremacist groups posted on DU lately. Anything that slams the president is fair game.

Daily Kos diary that doesn't have 72 troll ratings like the OP diary.

The Commander in Chief

Much better.

43. Only 72 troll ratings? The folks at Kos are usually much more on top of things
And so far DU has given it a total of 40+ totally UNironic recs. :eyes:

No wonder there's no facepalm smiley here. It'd be used to death in a week.

And, he can even smile politely when wielding his unused veto pen on lousy Republican legislation.

57. your mother is a whore and your father is a thief - if you're a liberal
that's essentially what's being screamed from every stump and corner in the country 24/7.

the lazy whining left just sticks their iPods in their ears and walk by those soapboxes. there is NO organized opposition to the 1000 coordinated think tank scripted radio stations that dominate the radio airwaves and attack them and their reps all day and lie about and distort their ideals.

maybe all the new voters that obama brought out figured they just needed to vote and blog and and whine and everything would be hunky dory.

at least have the stones to stomp on us Liberals when he gets the chance, and I hate the fricking UNrec Brigade, so here's another REC.

As far as whining, I don't know why he would be whining since he appears to be getting what he's planned to get all along. Which is why I'm all in favor of primarying him.

I'd put money on the author of that post being a major skinned-knee weeper, though - probably the second anyone dared say something remotely close to that about them.

120. We need to stop focusing on Obama because that is a waste of
time. We need to focus on winning back the House with the largest number of seats possible and adding to our seats in the Senate. I would love to see a veto proof majority and then let Congress legislate what needs to be done no matter who sits in the White House. Imagine what a veto proof Congress could achieve in 2 years (starting out with changing the filabuster rules). Republicans, Tea party and Obama would all become irrelevant. Because if Obama is not going to be part of the solution then he needs to step aside and let those who can - do.

all about vague promises of "change." Just enticing enough to rope in the unsuspecting voter desperate to extricate the country from the Bush criminal cabal.

False advertising and a huge con perpetrated on the American people. And, what's the most gut wrenching, is that the "choice" next Nov. will more than likely be between bad and worse. We are totally fucked.

136. I don't think Obama is given the credit he deserves
Watch him in public and he has a no nonsense straight forwardness and boyish honesty. He instills trust and gives hope, his words are like a painting. He has perfected the art of being a politician to a science.

Problem is with these guys, words are just tools, instruments to get reelected. The only way you can really judge them is by their actions. What do they sign or veto. How are they framing the argument. Who are they surrounding themselves with.

Anyone who knows Alan Simpson & Erskine Bowles knows what their recommendations would be.

Will Obama stand up for progressives?

"HE HAS US ON IGNORE"
