The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A woman living in a Marietta homeless shelter was arrested for stealing a car tag and placing it on her 1998 BMW 328I, according to court documents.

Cobb County police arrested Giovanni Compton July 22 at a YMCA in Marietta. The arrest warrant stated Compton was confronted when a police officer ran the tag number on her BMW and it was registered to a Honda Accord.

"Giovanni Nikki Compton advised that she borrowed the tag because she can't afford one right now," said a Cobb police officer in the arrest warrant.

4. Didn't you get the memo?
The poor aren't really poor in the US because they have access to TVs and internet and some even have cars. The righties have launched a campaign to redefine poor so they can say: "See, they're not really poor and therefore don't deserve or need help." It helps them sleep at nite while they cut funding for food stamps and heating assistance, aid for the disabled and healthcare for children...

9. They never see the other side of the coin...
that it could have been someone that did very well in a past life and has fallen to this because of hard times.

2. A daughter of the welfare queen in the fur coat, no doubt.
Media loves this stuff.. What would the story have been if the car had been a 1998 Hyundai?

My friend's husband bought a used BMW for $2k..it was a P.O.S. car, and after he sank thousands into it to "spiff it up", he still only got basically what he paid for it when he finally sold it, to free up garage space.

3. A 1998 car is "new"?
Edited on Wed Aug-03-11 01:49 PM by FloridaJudy
In which case I have a lovely one-year-old Ford Taurus to sell you...

I smell BS. Not only is that car not new, but we have no idea how long she's owned it. Or how long she's been homeless. She might be one of those job loss/divorce survivors who's holding on for dear life to the last thing she owns from before things went sour. If she's looking for work, she's gonna need a car: some places require proof of reliable transportation for employment, and the buses/subways don't always run to the places or on the schedules you need. I know this from personal experience.

Until we know more about her situation, this is just another shock headline about the "undeserving" poor.

I also have a wonderful meme about the Cadillac-Driving Welfare Queen I can sell you.

edited for clarity

5. To be honest...
At the risk of crossing someone with a showroom-perfect 98 328i, all of those 90s BMWs I see these days weren't taken care of, sound like sh!t and if they've spent any time up north, they're half-rusted through.

Without seeing the car, my first instinct is not to think too much of its value.

That is, of course, before getting into the actual human reasons why a homeless lady might be in a 98 BMW.

6. Better headline - Thief Steals, Gets Caught.
Wonder who ponied up the $1000 bail?

Unrelated note - a woman named "Giovanni?" That's a new one by me.
