What will President Obama be running on in 2012?
Edited on Wed Aug-03-11 10:59 AM by WI_DEM
Given the fragile economy and high unemployment what will be President Obama's issues in 2012? He will be renominated and even though I've become disenchanted with him on several issues I will vote for him against ANY GOP nominee.

1) I think he can take credit for saving the American automobile industry and thousands of jobs.

2) So far (and just barely this last quarter) the economy has been growing under his administration despite a higher unemployment rate than in 2009.

3) He is winding down the wars in Iraq and Afganistan.

4) Mission Accomplished on getting Bin Ladden

5) World opinion is more positive under Obama than under Bush

6) "I'm not him (or her)" regarding any of his potential rivals

7) Cut taxes (payroll tax cut) for the many rather than the few.

8) I inherited a bigger mess than I thought and it will take decades to get out of it.

What else...

1. All good approaches. I just hope we learn how to message better since
he'll need to be addressing more specifics this time, I think.

6. A boatload ...
The two years with Pelosi running the house were two of the most productive legislative years in our history.

Sorry, folks, HCR WAS A BFD. It isn't perfect, but over the last 50 years there is a path of presidents who fell short in enacting ANY HCR. Being all disaffected because it isn't universal (which I think is CLEARLY the way to go) only plays into the Obamacare right wing way of marginalizing it and him.

He has held up HIS end of being the adult in the room. YES, he ends up capitulating more than we would like, but THAT was his promise when he ran. Changing the tone. The Rs might be insatiable lunatics, but he has held HIS end in terms of engaging in a proper process and not engaging in rancorous rhetoric.

12. I don't see how (7) plays...
Republicans won't care, they aren't going to vote for him no matter how he triangulates.

Democrats will see it (correctly, in my opinion) as just misguided Reaganesque supply-side policy retread.

The mushy middle just won't care, because the economy stinks and they don't have jobs.

29. I think Obama will win handily, but not because he deserves to
In answer to your question, I think he'll be able to play up certain parts of the healthcare bill to moderates, even though it was a weak bill that started with capitulation and got worse from there. Killing bin Laden will be a feather in his cap--it's all symbolic and we're killing civilians by remote control same as always, but bin Laden's death will help him. He'll score several percentage points for acting like the adult as compared to the GOP, again, with centerists and undecided voters. I don't see him having a real problem against Romney or Bachmann, but I think that I'll need to leave the top of the ballot blank for the first time in my life.

HOPE will be replaced by ads and arguments that "the other guys/girl is just too dangerous" to be elected. He can't run on his record, so FEAR will be the default position.

45. So, the answer is he won't even tell the truth about his opposition.
He is just going to smile big, try to seem like a reasonable Republican forced to take a few non-Republican actions to save the economy, maybe mention the mess Bush left, and tell motherfuckers to eat their peas?

34. When I look for reasons to vote for Obama I look to what I think he will accomplish in the
next four years not what happened in the last four. None of the things you mention helps those who are without hope, without a roof over their heads, without an income, without medical care.

Yeah Bin Ladden is dead now how about a giving the unemployed a job?

39. When I look for a reason to vote for Obama...I need to look no further
than the thoughts of a republican in office and 6 Consertative SCJ. Now THAT really scares me. :scared:

It distresses me to see all the ReThug talking points quoted on DU. Some of them are worse than those on that other Forum. I thought this forum was to help Democrats get elected...not destroy them! Sometimes this place wants to make me :puke: and I wonder how many posters are really molls? I predict this place to go up in flames if we ever primaried Obama.
