PHOTO of the DAY (JAPAN) Dial up warning

About 10,000 paper lanterns dedicated to the victims of the March 11 disaster and to pray for successful reconstruction are floated on the Kyu Kitagami River in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, on the evening of July 31. The event is part of the annual Ishinomaki River summer festival. As Buddhist monks and other people read the names of victims of the quake and tsunami, members of their families and friends released paper lanterns on the river. As of July 29, 3,149 people were confirmed dead and 890 others missing in Ishinomaki alone. (Mainichi)

An Internet journalist shoots live video footage of girls dressed as maids taking part in an “uchi-mizu” event in Akihabara on Sunday. “Uchi-mizu” is an old summer custom of pouring water on the street and sidewalk to lower the temperature.

Drummers in the "Morioka Sansa Odori" festival perform on the street in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture on Aug. 1, 2011. People from the tsunami-stricken Taro district of Miyako, Iwate Prefecture, were among the participants, who paraded down the street filling the air with the sounds of drums, flutes, and chants. This year, the festival has been themed around recovery of the areas stricken by the March 11 disasters. (Mainichi)

A mobile library is making its rounds to children and adults at evacuation centers in Rikuzentakata, Ofutato, Otsuchi and Yamada in Iwate Prefecture, which were devastated by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. A light truck carries about 800 children's books and paperback books out of about 15,000 books donated by major publishers to the nonprofit Shanti Volunteer Association which has been active in construction of libraries in Thailand and Cambodia for some 30 years. (Mainichi)

The photograph taken from a Mainichi helicopter shows the central part of Sanjo, Niigata Prefecture, being flooded on July 30, 2011 after torrential rain swept through northeastern Japan. At least one person has died, five others are missing and about 400,000 people were urged to evacuate in Niigata and Fukushima prefectures. Total rainfall topped 600 millimeters in Kamo in Niigata Prefecture on the coast of the Sea of Japan. (Mainichi)

Water discharged from the Honna hydroelectric dam gushes down the Tadami River and past the remains of a rail bridge destroyed earlier by flood waters, in Kaneyama, Fukushima Prefecture, on July 30, 2011. Torrential rains in Niigata and Fukushima prefectures have flooded a number of communities, and some 390,000 residents have been given evacuation orders or warnings. (Mainichi)

8. In answer to your inquiry
I was beaten about the head and shoulders with a newspaper, for not putting up a "dial up warning" in the past, when there are too many photos. Some people, believe it or not, still use Dial up. So, having learned my lesson, and healed from the beatings, I now have to post that warning!

18. I heart Japan! My cousin lives in Tokyo and came home to marry his
Japanese fiance. We got the pleasure of meeting her family and a few friends. I have to say, they are the nicest people I've ever met.

My cousin sends me pics of Japan all the time and what an amazing place it is. I'm saving my pennies so I can visit them.

Thank you for posting these! And may those affected have a speedy recovery.
