What Do Bears And Wolves In Yellowstone National Park Do When No One's Watching?

There was a spot cleared right across the river from these two. Once I stopped I was able to look closely and saw the wolf was "playing" with a grizzly bear. I thought they might be attracted to a carcass, but there was no food around. The bear rolled on its back with its feet in the air. It also slid around the snow. The wolf stayed close, checking things out. The bear approached the wolf and they appeared to sniff around each other and on the ground. I had my camera so I took several pictures. They interacted for more than five minutes and then they both walked up the small drainage and out of sight. I don't know if that's a common type of encounter, but I doubt I will ever see it again!

1. My guess is the bear is discussing how to steal pick-a-nic baskets.

7. Anyone see the pix of the polar bear encounter with sled dogs up North?
Edited on Tue Aug-02-11 05:04 PM by KittyWampus
Some guy has his sled dogs tied up for the night and a polar bear came along. He was afraid the bear would eat his dogs (they would and could) but instead the polar bear played with the dogs.

Here's a link story with pix:

17. Just about all mammals find the young of other mammals to be "cute"

Except humans in restaurants.

26. You're wrong!
Only wolves and foxes are cute. The foxes also have some true vixens.

As to humans in restaurants: My daily migraines make me very sound sensitive. For that reason, I find all humans annoying in restaurants, especially my sister.

12. Remember when the photos of the polar bear playing with the sled dogs went
Edited on Tue Aug-02-11 05:34 PM by tblue37
around the internet some time ago?

http://cubeme.com/blog/2010/01/20/polar-bear-makes-a-friend-photos-by-norbert-rosing/

Here's a video of polar bears playing with sled dogs. Some of the moments in this video seem a bit more uncomfortable for the dogs, though apparently nothing unfortunate happened:

BTW, bears and dogs are pretty closely related species:
The fossil record indicates that bears evolved from "dog-like" animals, thus the Family most closely related to Ursidae would be Canidae (the dogs).

15. Cool!
I once watched coyotes and deer playing. They did it every morning during the early spring for about 2 weeks. I would have my coffee on the deck and watch them chase each other and pretend to hide and then run in circles. I had never seen it before and have never seen it since. When they tired they would just walk off. It was quite a sight.

19. We have families of Raccoons and Possums
that hang out in our back yard. There were a few fights between the raccoons, the possums and our cats. Now they all accept each other quite nicely. What a surprise when I came into the dining room and found them all eating together. The cat door is now closed all the time

30. Wild raccoons are a major rabies vector, so I am glad you plan to
keep your kitties away from them, even though they are fascinating to watch--from a distance.
