Change the name of this website
to "Democracy Underground." We no longer have a Democratic party that we can trust or support. This is a sorry day for this country.

1. Better still, why don't you CREATE a "Democrary Underground" website...
Edited on Tue Aug-02-11 10:48 AM by brooklynite
...and allow those of us who still believe in the Democratic Party to stay here and work to improve the Party, rather than throw up our hands and surrender?

in the historical tradition of the party. The present leaders in the party are the ones we should question. You appear to be a shallow Democrat since you object to thoughtful opinions.

23. Which historical tradition-- "states rights" from yellow dog segregationists or...
inner-city machines?

I grew up with Tammany Hall running things, and I prefer the messy Democratic Party of today to those days.

majority of people on here. I mean this isn't an "official" Democratic Party web site after all. I'll second it.

And before anybody whines about "not being a Democrat" depending on your age, I've probably voted for more Democratic candidates than ALMOST anybody on here. I've NEVER voted for a Republican, not even when Reagan was running.

I merely found his implication interesting.

There are "democrats" who only ever voted "R" once and it was for Reagan... but not usually the ones who think that existing democrats have shifted too far too the right.

36. I have voted for a Republican.
In the sixties the SF Bay Area had a Republican U.S. Senator named Tom Kuchel. Tom was a moderate Republican that, the Democrats in the area could, and did, support. He could have spent a lifetime in that position, except that the GOOP kicked him out in their primary of 1968.

24. Seriously, me either. 1 of the defining moments of becoming an adult is realizing
that politicians play politics. All of them. Some more than others, but all of them. And realizing that no party is trustworthy since, after all, politics IS the name of the game.

Also accepting that your parents probably had sex more than the one time necessary to make you. That's another defining point.

49. That's the talking point, really? That Progressives stayed home
in 2010? The facts say otherwise, and actually so does the Dem Leadership. They take the base for granted, and apparently they were right. Independents stayed home and that is the Leadership is worried will happen again.

Too bad the Leadership did not listen to Progressives who tried to warn them that if they continued to cave to Republicans they would have problems in the election.

Blaming voters for the failings of politicians is NOT a good strategy, and I and many others blame those who refused to listen to the concerns of voters thinking that the American people generally care more about party loyalty than their own interests.

It's been stunning to see the 'tactics' used by people who claim to know so much more about politics than the rest of us. They DROVE Independents away.

I suggest you try to convince people that the party WILL be working for them, rather than scream at them for excercising their right to vote for the candidates they believe best represent their interests.

I blame the bullies who essentially demand votes from the American people for the loss of the last election and for foisting the teabaggers on the rest of us.

50. Sorry, but I will continue to blame people who stayed home, people
who discouraged voter turnout, and people who voted for teabaggers.

Anyone who can look at what's happened in Wisconsin, Michigan, and across the US with all the anti-choice and anti-immigrant bills and still think it's OK not to vote because "both parties are the same" is a either a republican or an idiot and should be called out as such.

51. Then blame Independents and for that you have to blame politicians
who betrayed them. Because it was Independents who stayed home and polls all show they may do it again next time. Voters do not owe their votes to anyone. Politicians have to earn them. When they promise one thing and do another, they lose the voters. That is reality.

So you can waste your time playing the blame game with voters while letting politicians off the hook and it won't do a thing to get a single vote for a bad politician.

Otoh, the Dem Party can learn from what happened and fix the problem before it's too late. If they do not, eg, if they put Dinos on the Super Commission and the New Deal Programs are attacked, it will be too late. And this time they WILL lose progressives, if that happens.

It's very simple, keep your promises, fight for the people who elected you and the will enthusiastically come out and vote for you again.

If we end up with a Republican takeover I know who I will blame and so will many others. We warned them before the 2010 election and they had a warning when they lost Ted Kennedy's seat, but they ignored it and us.

We'll see but Nancy Pelosi admitted that by voting for bills that were the opposite of what the public wanted just to show loyalty to the WH, they put themselves in political jeopardy. So maybe you don't blame them, but they know what they did and why they lost.

28. Quit taking negotiation posturing seriously. We won't know the details
Because Obama wasn't going to do anything to jeopardize the debt ceiling vote.

Obama is playing the long game. He understands that the tea party will be with us until the 2012 elections. He has to limit the damage, and expose them as the anti government insurgents they are. They have to be exposed. Obama needs to give them just enough rope so they can hang themselves. There is no way to keep them from making a mess. All we can do is limit the damage, and use their games against them in 2012.

35. The owner and admins of this site would be the ones to
decide that. It's their site. There is an Ask the Administrators forum. Perhaps you can raise your question there. I doubt very much that they'll be interested.

On the other hand, you can start your own forum, with whatever name you wish, quite easily. Making it as active as DU? Not so easy. In fact, very, very difficult.

It's easy to criticize someone else's efforts. It's a lot more difficult to run a site like this one. Try it and you'll see.
