Dick Winters dies; WWII hero commanded 'Band of Brothers'

Posted at 11:12 PM ET, 01/ 9/2011
By T. Rees Shapiro

Dick Winters, a decorated Army officer whose World War II service was recounted in the best-selling book and HBO mini-series "Band of Brothers," died Jan. 2. News reports listed his age at 92.

Based on the 1992 book by historian Stephen E. Ambrose, the HBO mini-series came out in 2001 and was produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.

Winters later wrote in his diary, "I did not forget to get on my knees and thank God for helping me to live through this day and ask for his help on D plus one." And he made a promise to himself: if he lived through the war, he was going to find an isolated farm somewhere and spend the remainder of his life in peace and quiet. (Stephen Ambrose, Band of Brothers, 1992)

RIP, soldier.

and with a good plan, it seems.

9. Kick

From what I read in other sources, the news of his death
was not revealed until yesterday per Winters' request.

12. That's what they said when I first heard this on the late news...
So, of course, I came to DU to see what was here and I wasn't disappointed. I saw the mini-series a couple of years ago, very well done and Lt. Winters, as the commander of Easy Company, was certainly the most memorable, and a real-life hero. I also found this article, which I think does him justice: :patriot: :hi:

14. That's the kind of man he was.

He was a real life hero but he never wanted to be regarded as one. I'm sure he knew there
would be a big fuss made about his passing so he left word to keep it quiet for a while.
You don't see many people like Dick Winters.
