Skeleton Found in Chimney 27 Years After Man Disappeared

July 27, 2011

The remains of Joseph Schexnider, missing for 27 years, were finally discovered lodged in a brick chimney at the Abbeville National Bank in Louisiana.

The bones were found in May when the bank was renovating the second floor, which had long been used for storage, to make more office space.

The identity of the body was confirmed this week through DNA.

"This was absolutely the first chimney recovery we had ever had," said Mary Manhein, head of FACES, the lab at Louisiana State University that identified Schexnider's bones.

Hmmm...I would think there would have been a noticable odor.

3. Poor guy, sounds like a really unpleasant way to go
I don't know about a smell - if the only vent was 2+ stories up, any odor could have dispersed before being noticeable. And perhaps if the body dried out quickly - cooked, basically - there may not have been much. As I recall, the design of the above-ground graves and iron coffins was partly to desiccate a corpse quickly, and perhaps a chimney would have the same effect.

I like how vague they are about why he might have been in the chimney... :)

4. This sentence might reveal a clue as to why he was there...
When he disappeared in January 1984 the family reportedly thought he might be running from the law because he had failed to appear in court for possession of a stolen vehicle.

Could he have been trying to burglarize the bank? Climb in through the chimney and rile the cash boxes?

6. That was my thought
Go down the chimney late on a Friday night, get stuck over a holiday weekend, he'd be too dehydrated and sick by Tuesday morning to call for help and would likely be dead by Tuesday night.
