Does anyone here have an idea about US Savings Bonds and
if they should be cashed in prior to next Tuesday?
I have a few, left to me by my late Mom. I've just kept them in a safe deposit box, and I believe they are maxed out on interest, so I would not lose anything by cashing them in.

Does anyone know if these will become worthless or compromised should the whole shebang go down the tubes?

I don't want to bother to ask at the bank. I doubt if they would know, and if they do know, they don't want to spread panic by telling me the truth.

1. We were looking at the same thing. Didn't get a straight answer

but I would suspect they're gonna be affected in some way. We have close to 20K, but most are still collecting interest and a small batch of them would require a penalty be paid inorder to cash them in.

They were the kind that you put aside for your kids education. Turns out we won't need them for our daughter and our son isn't ready for college for another 7 years.

2. I am not an expert but I wouldn't worry about either way
If the debt ceiling is raised, no problem. If the debt ceiling is not raised, it probably will not destroy the country or the economy, no problem. If I am wrong about that and things go totally belly up, neither the bonds or the money you would get by cashing them in will be worth anything.

3. You have received a good response above but
jftr - if they are aged out you ought to cash them in anyway.

One way to see if you have matured bonds is this website:

http://www.treasurydirect.gov/indiv/tools/tools_treasuryhunt.htm

You search by SS#. I found a couple belonging to my mother that had been lost.

5. We'll be too busy fighting each other for food to worry about bonds.
