The president did not even attempt to sell anyone on anything. He just repeated what he's said
before. And rather unconvincingly, I might add.

If he really had a solid plan, massive defense cuts would be on the table.

14. Unrec is a creepy tactic for bullies and terrified children
Real grownups let the chips fall where they may and let arguments stand on their own. More importantly, they have a respect for reality that compels them to want to know what others are truly thinking, rather than shouting out dissidents and living in fantasyland.

2. because he never said this in primetime....
when more people are listening...didn't he ask the people to call congress if they are in favor of his approach...he had to make a speech in primetime, maybe it should have been done sooner?

3. Hello, I'm from a planet where most people don't pay attention to everything the president says
I assume things are working out more smoothly on your planet?

4. He wants everyone to contact their congressman/congresswoman
.....and tell them REVENUES must be part of the debt solution.

He's calling people to action.

Did you miss that one last request?

13. Seriously. There is no "we" in "yes we can".
god this is getting old. He used the speech to ask for help in putting pressure on congresscritters and "that's not going to go anywhere"?

19. If you don't try, then you deserve what you get.
How is this any diffrent than a vote at the polling booth? One vote doesn't help. 5,000,000 are hard to ignore.

I wrote and called not only my Senators and Congressman, but also Pelosi (support). Could not get through to Boehner. Will keep trying.

5. what about
"let's cut the defense budget by hundreds of billions of dollars?"

and

"Most Americans, regardless of political party, don’t understand how we can ask a senior citizen to pay more for her Medicare before we ask corporate jet owners and oil companies to give up tax breaks that other companies don’t get. How can we ask a student to pay more for college before we ask hedge fund managers to stop paying taxes at a lower rate than their secretaries? How can we slash funding for education and clean energy before we ask people like me to give up tax breaks we don’t need and didn’t ask for? "

7. I disagree. The fact that he reiterated previous points re: a complex problem
is hardly new. And its necessary in a big country like the US. Its not up to one President to provide the sole plan when an entire Congress is on the payroll.

8. For the first time he asked us to do something.
So why don't you contact your representatives and tell them about your idea of making massive defense cuts? I think he has a point. We should have our say, other than knee jerk complaining because he isn't doing it all for us.
