The ONLY thing a Majority of Americans agree upon is RAISING Taxes on the Wealthy
Edited on Mon Jul-25-11 04:26 PM by FreakinDJ
Republicans are attempting to fill the News cycle with "A Majority of Americans" support blah blah blah, so I decided to take a look. It readily came to mind to question the results of the latest CNN polling since all through the last 6 months of polling the only thing a Majority of Americans agree upon is they want the tax loopholes closed, Taxes raised on the Wealthy, and the don't want any cuts to Social Security or Medicare

But here lets look at what Americans actually want CUT

increasing taxes that have been suggested as part of the discussions on the debt ceiling. For each
one, please tell me whether you favor or oppose that proposal as a way to reduce the amount that
the government owes. (RANDOM ORDER)

Favor Oppose No Opinion
Cutting federal subsidies to farmers 31% 66% 2%

Cutting pensions and benefits for retired government workers 30% 68% 2%

Cutting defense spending 47% 52% 1%

Cutting the amount the government spends on Medicaid,
the federal health program for the poor 22% 77% *

Cutting the amount the government spends on Medicare,
the federal health program for the elderly 12% 87% 1%

Cutting the amount the government spends on Social Security 16% 84% 1%

Increasing the taxes paid by oil and gas companies by ending
federal subsidies for those businesses 73% 26% 1%

Increasing the taxes paid by businesses that own private jets 76% 23% *

Increasing the taxes paid by people who make more than
250 thousand dollars a year 73% 26% *

The American Tax Payer's position has not changed for 6 months. Again and again numerous polling organizations have asked 1000s Americans and they have repeatedly, resoundingly said "Raise the Taxes on the Wealthy and Corporations" - so I have to ask myself "Self what are the Republicans seeing that I'm not"

So I thought to myself - perhaps we need to teach our Republican Lawmakers to read. Clearly - they can't be reading the will of the American voter via some exotic Voo Doo Mind Reading spell.

In the June 9 ABC News poll 61% of Americans believe higher taxes will be necessary to reduce the deficit, and 57% of those polled said that deficit reduction should include both tax increases and spending cuts.

A Pew poll found that more people blame the nation’s involvement in wars than tax cuts or spending for the deficit. The poll also found wide support for increasing taxes, as 67% said the more high earners income should be subject to being taxed for Social Security, and 66% support raising taxes on incomes over $250,000, and 62% support closing corporate tax loopholes.

A Bloomberg poll taken in May found that only 33% of those surveyed thought that it would be possible to lower the deficit without raising taxes, 64% expressed the belief that it isn’t possible to lower the deficit without raising taxes.

An April CBS News/NY Times poll showed that 72% of people favored raising taxes on the wealthy in order to reduce the deficit. A March NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll found that 81% of those surveyed would support a tax on millionaires that would be used for deficit reduction, and 68% supported eliminating the Bush tax cuts on those who make over $250,000.

they are now proposing a Super Congress that will make it easier for them to bypass us in shoving through legislation to thieve from the poor and give to the rich.

6. The leaders of both parties occupy an inverted universe, opposed to most of the American people
and 180 degrees out of alignment with the views of the majority on these issues.

Mr. Reid, Mr. Schumer, Mr. Obama - you are far too fast to offer cuts in essential services and the safety net and always seem to end up at the end of negotiations even further away from what the majority want.

One can easily conclude that you serve the same monied interests who sustain the tea partiers. The professional political class is corrupt - ALL OF THEM.

9. Citizen vs voter?
The American Tax Payer's position has not changed for 6 months. Again and again numerous polling organizations have asked 1000s Americans and they have repeatedly, resoundingly said "Raise the Taxes on the Wealthy and Corporations" - so I have to ask myself "Self what are the Republicans seeing that I'm not"
Perhaps that the poll catches an average among the US citizens, but not the US voters - and that is what counts. It hardly matters if 80% is in favor of something when 2/3 of those 80% are to lazy to vote the 20% who are opposed to it will still win.

11. Sorry - you Missed 1 BIG Failure of the poll - Conflicting Results
Edited on Mon Jul-25-11 04:42 PM by FreakinDJ
66% Favored Republican Plan
66% Favored Democrat Plan

You think they might have Fucked up their polling questions on purpose to produce conflicting results ?????

Gee - I can read that any way I want and so can RATpubliCONs.

Congress would raise the debt ceiling while cutting between two trillion and
four trillion dollars in government spending over the next ten years and raising taxes on some
businesses and higher-income Americans.

66% Favored

Congress would raise the debt ceiling only if a balanced budget amendment
were passed by both houses of Congress and substantial spending cuts and caps on future spending

66% Favored

17. "What is the Definition of Push Poll" and only 1 asked the CCB question
Edited on Mon Jul-25-11 05:41 PM by FreakinDJ
It would behoove you to read the actual questions of the poll before buying into the opinion of some talking head

Currently, nearly every state in the nation has a
balanced budget amendment, prohibiting states from spending more
then they have. The U.S. Congress, however, is not currently
required to balance the federal budget. Do you support or
oppose an amendment to the U.S. Constitution requiring Congress
to pass a balanced budget every year?

Your second link NEVER asked the Question of a Balanced Budget Amendment - it did however reiterated the same "Tax the Wealthy" as all the other polls too

In order to lower the federal budget deficit, do you approve or disapprove ofincreasing federal taxes starting in 2013 for households earning $250,000 a year or more?

72% Approve

Of course, there is a slight possibility that they are all correct, it's just that the results are unacceptable.

28. We can certainly blame Bush for a lot, but the "Drunken Sailors" were the Republican in Congress.
Presidents don't have the authority to spend, Congress does.

In any case, the debt ceiling issue is nothing more than a chance for Ds & Rs to get in some good political posturing. When the Ds have the power, the Rs morph into budget hawks. Likewise, the reverse applies.

Record of the Senate Vote on raising the debt ceiling in 2006.

18. You are correct - Raising taxes on 250K+ income (73%), & subsidies for oil, gas & jets (73-76%)...

...were the only revenues raising or deficit reducing choices which had over 50% public support.

My comment was based on the CNN poll in your OP -- which showed that the OPPOSITION to cutting Medicare & Social Security was even more universal than the support for raising taxes on the wealthy. (The opposition to cutting spending on Medicare & Social Security being 87% and 84& respectively (from the CNN poll at the top of your OP). (

This does not contradict your conclusion, but elaborates upon your correct conclusion.)
