A Reid plan that includes a Super Congress sounds extremely dangerous.

They are announcing that the Reid plan does not affect Social Security and Medicare.

Maybe it doesn't right now. However, if a Super Congress is part of the plan, you can bet that SS and Medicare cuts are more easily passed not far down the road, along with god knows what other legislation to transfer wealth from the poor and working class to the rich.

Once you give extra powers to the twelve most powerful and corporate-connected members of Congress, you have eliminated representative government. The Congress must represent all the states and all the people, not pick and choose the members who will pass legislation favorable to the banks and corporations...which will be the result if the Super Congress is permitted to take hold.

I want details. This sounds to me like holding back on the theft for now, in favor of implementing a STRUCTURE that will make the theft much easier in the near future.

Let's be very careful here. I don't like the sound of this at all.

1. A Super Congress sounds like a way to bypass representing The People.

7. +1 That is exactly what it would do,
if I am reading the reports correctly. They would reap accolades for protecting Medicare and SS this time, while slipping into place a structure that removes our ability to protect ourselves from future assaults like this.

We are under siege from the rich, and this may be the most devious battle plan yet from the banks and corporate contributors.

13. No. That is simply wrong, and this whole "super congress" nonsense is just BS.
12 Congresscritters get together and issue some deficit reduction recommendations, which then get voted on just like any other bill. Period. If it's not popular, it dies in the Senate. Saying anything else, or casting it as a "super congress" with the magical ability to make it's own laws, is simply fearmongering.

2. K&R. Plus, Sen . Whitehouse just tweeted about saving Pell grants.
So I assume they are in danger, too.

14. Yes, I think we need to be very vocal bout this one.
People are cheering this one, because it appears to prevent Medicare and SS cuts. The media is not talking about the Super Congress at all.

Thank you for your posts. I really think people need to start calling and writing about this.

8. This is nothing more than a con
It allows those that vote for the Reid plan to claim they "stood firm and protected SS", while knowing full well their vote will lead to slashing benefits later through the unconstitutional abdication of Congressional authority that "super congress" committee represents.

Its like the Iraq war authorization, where many Democrats later tried to claim their vote only authorized a use of force if needed, even though they all knew Bush intended to invade.

9. Congress does this all the time when it needs to push legislation through
This isn't unprecedented nor particularly alarming.
