The Wikipedia description of fascism (

These types of criminal events are EXACTLY what the right wing noise machine wants to happen. They want the cold civil war which has been going on in this country for 30 years to turn into a hot civil war. They welcome it with open arms because they believe that they will be safe and they will emerge the victors (because those soft lefties don’t have the will to commit violence). They don't necessarily want to be the supreme totalitarian ruler of the US (except maybe Sarah Palin) - they just want one of "theirs" to be that person. They don't want the pesky barriers of democracy or law and order or human rights to interfere with their lives or their accumulation of wealth. They don't love America, the democratic republic - they love their ideology and themselves and they know professing to love American democracy is the only way they can keep people listening to them. In a way they are the Leni Rieffenstahl's of the fascist takeover of the US - and they revel in their role in intensifying people's fear, manipulating that fear into hatred, and directing that hatred toward violence. Actually, they seem to be very similar to the Austrofascists:

One thing that they don’t recognize is that, unlike the Austrofascist movements, there is no real single religion they can rule under … once they get into true power they will start fighting each other over which brand of Christianity should be the national religion!
Personally they are sadistic greedy power-hunger psychopaths who have no empathy, compassion, or shame. They consider ANY number of deaths (as long as those deaths are not their own or their very, very, very small circle of loved ones) are an insignificant price to pay for increasing their power and wealth. But they are too cowardly and devious to get their own hands dirty.
They are not dumb. They know perfectly well that their language incites violence … that is their goal. They know better than to explicitly say “kill these people” but shouting down public speakers at town hall meetings and hurling epithets are publically supported parts of the game plan. If stomping on people’s heads, starting riots, and shooting sprees also emerge they may publically condemn them but privately they view them as part of the game plan, too. As with most other fascism supporters they rely on fear to control people because they know very well that their beliefs are very much in the minority and that open honest debate about how their beliefs and the public policies that go along with their beliefs affect the majority of people would rapidly turn the tides against them. Random acts of violence (especially if they can throw up their hands and say “who could have expected this – if you had supported us we could have protected you”) are their primary currency. They really are terrorists who are running a nationalistic pseudo-protection racket.
