Explorers find bizarre, spaceship-like object at the bottom of the Baltic Sea
Explorers find bizarre, spaceship-like object at the bottom of the Baltic Sea

Annalee Newitz — Several days ago, we reported that a Swedish team of shipwreck hunters discovered a strange, circular object at the bottom of the Baltic Sea that looks sort of like the Millennium Falcon. The group was using sonar to plumb the depths of the waters, hoping to find shipwrecks that might contain treasures they could sell. The Ocean Explorer team isn't sure what to make of this strange discovery that some are calling a crashed UFO, but they've released more information about it.

Here you can see Peter Lindberg, from the Swedish Ocean Explorer team that discovered the object, explaining what they found. Earlier, he told reporters:

At 87 meters down, between Sweden and Finland, they saw a large circle, about 60 feet in diameter. You see a lot of wierd stuff in this job but during my 18 years as a professional I have never seen anything like this. The shape is completly round…a circle.

Apparently there are tracks about 300 meters long leading up to the object, leading Lindberg to speculate that the object has moved. So far nobody has explored the object yet, so hopefully we'll be learning more about this as the story develops.

1. I love stories like these, but seldom see follow-up
Seems like it should be relatively simple to just get down there and see what it is. Surely somebody has the right equipment.

Thanks for posting

3. Pretty hard to tell anything from those fuzzy images.
I notice that the main thing the guy in the video is about is getting some investors to pay for further exploration. I think I'd pass, frankly, at this stage. There's just not enough information. I expect we'll never hear about this again.

Oh and no boys we are not alone. To think this is the height of hubris. Of course in the US that is quite common... after all we are exceptional... ROLF... by the way have I developed a new set of fans among the IGNORED crowd? I think so...

46. A wooden spacecraft from IKEA, no doubt. Trouble is,
whoever put it together didn't understand the instructions and didn't install the cam-lock fasteners correctly, so it crashed on its first flight. IKEA then dropped the Vønüz SpaceShip from its catalog and abandoned the SKU.

See - there's a simple explanation for everything.

36. They do that regularly
and if this tuns out to be a mundane thing, sooner or later we will find evidence we are not alone. I highly doubt it will be a smoking gun. I think Spitzer will do that most likely. And people here on Earth will still refuse to believe this, on religious grounds.

37. Not so. Some of us just don't draw conclusions about things
until there's some real information to consider. At this point, it's nothing more than a round, fuzzy image. Until it is further inspected or raised, we don't know what the heck it is. Speculations about it being some sort of space ship or flying saucer are simply ridiculous.

As I said in another post, though, we'll probably never hear about this again. If we do, then I'll see what new information has emerged.

Still if this turns to be real, we are talking of REAL evidence that we are not alone... a smoking gun.

And yes, whoever, assuming they crossed the stellar ocean for a second, did that... if they have agressive intentions yes we are screwed.

11. 87 meters is pretty deep but couldn't they get access to a simple thethered camera and....
...drop it like an anchor down there. 300 feet of water is pretty shallow, all-told. For an outfit calling itself the Swedish Ocean Explorer team, you'd imagine this would be something they're familiar with. Don't need an ROV. I realize currents and so forth would push any anchor-weighted camera around but 60 feet is a decent target to play with. I usually chalk shit like this up to "something that got pushed off a ship in WW II".

I mean, I'd love more than anyone if this thing was an alien spacecraft, complete with the militarized biological entities which escaped containment and killed the alien crew- but come one, we never get that lucky.

14. I love the fact that they jump right to aliens and spaceships...
...while ignoring the more mundane, but far more probable, terrestrial explanations, such as a structure or tank that washed out to sea at some point and simply sank there. Considering the fact that the Baltic was also a major shipping seaway for the Soviets during the Cold War, it's not all that improbable that something big might have been lost into the sea and never made public.
