Don't Cut Social Security To Pay Down the Debt
It's outrageous that so many in Washington want to cut Social Security to reduce the federal debt. Social Security did not contribute to this financial mess and should not be used as a piggy bank to pay for a financial crisis it didn’t create. If it weren't for Social Security, millions of Americans like me would have little to depend on during this economic nightmare. So why is this program, which touches the lives of virtually every American family and has provided a lifeline during this crisis, now being targeted by the “Gang of Six” and others? Because, that’s “where the money is” and Congress should be ashamed.
Whether it’s switching the COLA formula, means testing Social Security, or fast-tracking benefit cuts through Congress, forcing seniors and their families to foot the bill for Washington’s fiscal failures is not the direction the majority of Americans want to go. There have been plenty of polls to prove this. I understand the need for fiscal responsibility and want a prosperous future for my children and grandchildren. However, I also know that we don’t have to rob from Social Security to do that. The way things are going in Washington these days, younger people will likely need Social Security even more than we do. Balancing the budget on the backs of retirees and workers while offering even more tax cuts for the wealthy is not “shared sacrifice” and will never win the support of the American people.
