Ohio Dems seek to tie governor to Murdoch
TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Ohio Democrats are trying to raise money by tying Republican Gov. John Kasich to troubled media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

The Blade newspaper of Toledo reports state Democratic Chairman Chris Redfern sent a fundraising email Tuesday claiming no U.S. public official has benefited more from Murdoch's News Corp. than John Kasich.

Murdoch gave $1.25 million last year to the Republican Governors Association, saying later he hoped it would help candidate Kasich, a former commentator on News Corp.'s Fox News. Murdoch and his wife gave Kasich's campaign for governor a combined $20,000.

Redfern wrote that Kasich's Fox salary, his contribution from Murdoch and the money to the governors group should be donated to charity.

3. Like it matters.
Poor approval numbers notwithstanding, SlowHio's Teabaggerati will find some way to forgive Kat$hit and excuse him, as they've been conditioned to believe the Reagan line of the "have-even-littler-than-youse" are the source of all American economic problems. Oh and that Republicans are your cowboy heroes and Democrats are "sissy Commies".

4. You sound like you live here. :) I hear you but I do think as much mud as
Kasich has slung it's only fair to drag him through the mud a few thousand laps whether anything comes of it or not.

6. Oh, no doubt. He's ALL about the "slash, burn and leave a rotted corpse" plan.
Just like his WI counterpart, only Kasich cannot be recalled. So he can take his time.

13. I've come in contact with
die-hard repugnants and they hate Kasick as much as I do....maybe even more since they're finding out what Betrayal is.

We need to get King John involved in some kind of legal mess/scandal to slow his ass down.

Getting people out to vote this November to eliminate SB5 is a good start. I really think we can do that....teachers, police, etc. are very organized and they will GOTV.

I miss Strickland so much. I actually wish he would primary Obama, but I know it's a dream....even though he has been critical of Obama's policies in the press.

7. I don't think so. Not a cop in the state is going to vote for Kasich...
after what he's done to them. Neither will their families. Besides, the economy will not improve by 2014 because nothing is being done at the national level to make it do so, and all Kasich will do is let his Wall Street cronies loot all the public assets they can. Anyway, the Democrats will probably take back the State House of Representatives next year, Kasich's SB5 will go down to defeat at the polls this year, and he will look ineffective.

Kasich has also screwed over the cities big time. For example, the City of Cleveland said that due to Kasich's budget cuts they could not afford to open city swimming pools every day of the week during the current heat wave, and also rightly explained that there will be more potholes and less snow removal for the same winter. Little things like that add up.

I expect turnout in Cuyahoga(Cleveland metro), Franklin(Columbus metro), and Lucas(Toledo) to be a lot higher in 2012 and 2014 than they were in 2010. That's very bad news for any Republican running for statewide office, and doom for Republican state reps and some state senators.

8. Results notwithstanding, sometimes you just have to do the right thing anyway
Certainly we see that often enough from our friends in the conservative wing. The thing is, with a friendly media push, they often get a lot of traction on their quixotic quests. We can't count on that, naturally, but holding jerks like Kasich accountable, and highlighting his ties to corruption, can have a salutary effect eventually. An immediate effect would be a lot more gratifying, but sometimes you just do what you can.

9. Murdoch and his wife are not US Citizens
Citizens United opened the floodgates for News Corpse, but how does that exempt foreign donations?

10. I thought Murdoch was a naturalized citizen
Edited on Wed Jul-20-11 01:19 PM by LaurenG
I think he was naturalized in 1986. Edited to add it was 1985 and here is a link http://www.answers.com/topic/rupert-murdoch

Over the years, Rupert Murdoch acquired more and more media outlets in Australia and then overseas, from China to Europe and the United States. (He became a U.S. citizen in 1985 in order to meet the legal requirements for owning American TV stations.)

12. Kasich might be in trouble, but this won't have much to do with it
The Strickland campaign pushed his Wall Street connections hard and it wasn't nearly enough. Besides, by the time he's up again in 2014, the Murdoch scandal will be old news. This might help a bit with fundraising for other Dem campaigns in the next three years, but it's neither here nor there for Kasich himself. That being said, he's going to have a lot to answer for.
