6 killed in a shooting gets our attention
Edited on Sun Jan-09-11 01:24 PM by Omaha Steve

Almost 40 die on the job in a week, and nobody raises an eyebrow. One of the deaths was here in Omaha. A shooting by a student of Assistant Principal Vicki Kaspar. One other injured. The shooter missed the janitor.

In another case, a teachers aide saved a very special student while giving their own life.

2. An assassination attempt on a sitting US Congresswoman is a pretty unique event
Something that doesn't happen every day.

Shootings we have every day. At least around here.

12. No, we don't have exactly that shooting here every day
Edited on Sun Jan-09-11 02:15 PM by NNN0LHI
But there are shootings of some kind in and around Chicago every day.

Attempted political assassinations not so much.

Capisce?

4. Yes and none of those are from political assassinations.
Do you have a point, because a big one was made yesterday.

5. I hear ya, OS, it's an epidemic. Violence is seen as the answer
to every problem.

We need to take a stand on ALL VIOLENCE and the questions of mental health care for all who need it. Clearly in all of the shootings that I have read about there is a grave component of mental health problems. If we had health care for all, ...?? One can only imagine. And sorry, Boehner, no one strolls into an emergency room and gets treated for a mental health issue, so don't give me that crap that everyone can take advantage of the "best health care" out there.

6. People are killed every day in this country.
This got people's attention because of the political nature of the attack.

7. Right. I think about how the U.S. murders innocents in the Middle East every day, too.

But Giffords was one of the privileged people. She counts. The common rabble (us) do not. However, the right to assemble is an important consideration here, too, so it's not just about one of the privileged being shot.
