1. What is somewhat surprising is that
Edited on Sun Jan-09-11 08:26 AM by LARED
someone thinks guns laws will prevent psychos from getting guns.

2. It is also suprising that a common reason for advocating relaxed carry laws
is that it reduces crime and mass attacks of this sort. There is little evidence to support that at this time.

3. You are probably correct, but
in states with carry laws, there is at least a chance a citizen could stop something like this. In my state of NJ which effectively bans carrying, there is vitually no chance a citizen could stop a lunatic like this.

27. What sort of science?
Care to share how you arrived at the number you posted, or even provide a hint as to what it means. Being science and all, that should be a simple request.

8. I agree - but if you are going to advocate for carry laws at least reason in reality.
I want to carry so that I can have a chance at defending myself should the need arise. I also want to be able to defend my home. But it is up to me to decide when I want to engage an adversary.

It is entirely possible that there were people carrying at the scene, and that they decided not to intervene for whatever reason. That is their right.

6. That's right! Even a self-professed willingness to commit political assassinations...
...(as is apparently true in the the case of this shooter) shouldn't
cause the abrogation of someone's 2nd Amendment rights (and
remedies), right?

22. Not sure what you mean
If you mean the shooter, professing a willingness to commit political assassination, forfeits his rights, I agree. If you are stating our 2nd amendemnt rights should be limited because of nut cases. I strongly disagree.

23. The shooter apparently *HAD* professed an intention to partake in political assassination.

Yet even so, here in America, thanks to the gun manufacturer's
lobby, there were no effective mechanisms in place to prevent
him from becoming armed with deadly weapons.

Expect much more of this.

17. No and you can't. At least I never had to fill out background check form
and have the kid call it into the FBI and state Police prior to getting a firearm. Also they never asked me for two forms of ID before ordering a big mac either.

Would you like some straw with your big mac?

26. Sometimes, I hate mine too, but...
I don't know if you're from Arizona, but I'm from NH and we have our share of nuts here, too. I think what we have to do is think about the natural beauty of our states and the good people in it, not the negatives. After all, we live in these states and they belong to us, too.

7. Any laws against murder in Arizona?
How about discharging a firearm in public?
Maybe one about reckless endangerment?

If only there had been a registration law.. none of yesterday's tragic events would have happened?

10. Only a minority of states have gun registration but it serves little purpose and has huge expense.
Edited on Sun Jan-09-11 11:50 AM by Statistical
How would gun registration have prevented this crime? How would it helped to have solved this crime?

Even Canada is considering abandoning its gun registration system over massively higher than expected costs and virtually no benefit. It actually has taken Police Officers off the streets (due to the administrative overhead for running such a system).

It's for protection. And I shouldn't be required to have a license. That would be totally unnecessary.

16. How many people own guns in AZ? Now how many have used them in crimes?
Same question for the US in general.

The whole gun thing reminds me of the RW and muslims - spread fear and use any event you can to bolster your fear, even if the broader numbers put that fear to absolute shame.

25. Big deal. Jared would have just legally registered his gun then gone on his shooting spree...
What difference would have it made?

The only intervention that would have prevented this tragedy is Jared having access to quality mental health care.
