News International found “smoking gun” emails in 2007
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-14099102

News International found emails in 2007 that appeared to indicate that payments were being made to the police for information, although this evidence of alleged criminal behaviour was not handed to the Metropolitan Police for investigation until 20 June of this year.

According to sources, these emails were in the possession of the firm of solicitors Harbottle & Lewis.

They were retrieved from Harbottle & Lewis by William Lewis, general manager of News International - who is in charge of News International's investigation into what went wrong at the News of the World (and who was recruited by News International last July).

(snip)

The disclosure that News International found 300 emails as long ago as 2007, that indicated wider malpractices at the News of the World than those which led to the jailing of Mr Goodman and of the private detective Glen Mulcaire, is likely to increase criticism of News International's chairman, James Murdoch, son of Rupert Murdoch.

2. Note Cameron's comment about how the scandal will reveal "how politics works too"
Edited on Sun Jul-10-11 08:50 AM by leveymg
A quote from David Cameron in The DailyMail:

"He also promised action to 'get to the bottom' of the phone hacking scandal but said it was not just about the press but about the police and 'about how politics works too'.

That comment "about how politics works too" is particular notable in a political system like the UK (and US) where elites in both political parties are heavily compromised by al-Yamamah, the $80 billion Saudi-BAE slush fund. That is essentially a pile of unaccounted for kickback money that is used by the KSA and western defense contractors and corporations they have ownership interests in (or contracts with) to buy political candidates and elections. Yes, the Saudis do what they can to buy western elections, and have plenty of money to do it with. For instance, the major investor in Rupert Murdoch's NewsCorp is the Saudi Royal family. See, "Bandar Bush" was running "Yamamah" slush fund that was used to buy US and UK politicians, http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=6212624&mesg_id=6212648

NewsCorp is, in effect, being run as an agent of influence for the Saudis, and they've been engaged in a very organized, very far-ranging war of dirty tricks, including massive propaganda, political wiretapping and bribery of police, intelligence and top elected officials. See this article about Murdoch's relationship with Blair, and Blair's efforts to thwart the investigation. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2013027/News-World-Tony-Blair-tried-hush-phone-hacking-scandal.html Murdoch isn't the only pet shark in the pond, but he's a very big fish, more like Moby Dick.

The Foreign Corrupt Practices investigation into Yamamah-BAE was never resolved on either side of the shark-infested pond. I would not be too surprised if the phone-hacking scandal is the harpoon they'll finally use to lance the Great White.
