SARAH PALIN'S ALASKA has reportedly been dropped by TLC
Sunday's season finale of Sarah Palin's Alaska is said to be the show's last episode, Entertainment Weekly reports.

The former Alaska governor's TLC reality series -- which premiered Nov. 14 -- averaged 3.2 million viewers per week, with its first episode delivering the network's best-ever launch ratings.

Coming under fire for her wildlife exploits, including caribou hunting and fishing too close to bears, Palin's Alaska also showcased the politician's children and husband, Todd.

5. Not what I heard...
...it was a mutual decision and mostly predicated upon the presumed "fact" that she will be running for President and neither side wanted to deal with the "equal time" issue.

Hah, the events of today may have the Wasilla Wingnut regretting the decision since it is reasonably argued that her Presidential stock just went from a low into deficit category this afternoon.

7. There is no "equal time" issue. The fairness doctrine was revoked.

9. 'Sarah Palin's Alaska': No second season.
'Sarah Palin's Alaska': No second season.

It’s easily one of the most-buzzed about (or should we say slammed?) shows in the history of TLC, so it’s natural to assume that Sarah Palin’s Alaska could have a future on the cable network, right? Unfortunately for you caribou-hunting fans, there’s only bummer news to report (for now). EW did its due diligence and discovered there are no plans to send uber-producer Mark Burnett back to Wasilla with Palin, who’s lured an averaged 3.2 million viewers to TLC with her show. So this Sunday’s two-hour finale of Sarah Palin’s Alaska appears to be its last.

Insiders admit that Palin seemed to enjoy doing the show more than she expected, in spite of the bad press that it generated. But it makes sense why Palin wouldn’t want to commit to another season: If she and her family chose to shoot more episodes, it would surely be interpreted as a sign that she had no plans to run for office. By not doing a second round, Palin would spare TLC the trouble of having to provide her fellow candidates with equal-access time of their own in the event she did decide to run. So, so long show about hunting, Eskimo bingo, and vacation spots that are so not for Kate Gosselin!

11. Entertainment Weekly is misinformed.
TLC would incur no such obligation.

14. Uhhh, no. Apparently they are not....
... "misinformed."

The equal-time rule specifies that U.S. radio and television broadcast stations must provide an equivalent opportunity to any opposing political candidates who request it. This means, for example, that if a station gives one free minute to a candidate on the prime time, it must do the same for another candidate.

However, there are four exceptions: if the air-time was in a documentary, bona fide news interview, scheduled newscast or an on-the-spot news event the equal-time rule is not valid. Since 1983, political debates not hosted by the media station are considered news events, thus may include only major-party candidates without having to offer air time to minor-party or independent candidates.

This rule originated in § 18 of the Radio Act of 1927 <1>. It was later superseded by the Communications Act of 1934, where the Equal Time Rule is codified as § 315(a).

Another provision of § 315(a) prohibits stations from censoring campaign ads. A related provision, in § 315(b), requires that broadcasters offer time to candidates at the same rate as their "most favored advertiser".

The rule was created because the FCC thought the stations could easily manipulate the outcome of the elections.

The Equal Time rule should not be confused with the Fairness Doctrine, which deals with presenting balanced points of view on matters of public importance.

21. Yes they are, the equal time rule only applies to broadcast stations
Not cable networks like TLC.

18. Indeed, a recent and practical example for your own "reading"....
Fred Thompson's Presidential Hopes Could Put 'Law' Reruns in Lockup

By Michael D. Shear
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, March 30, 2007

If Fred Thompson, the onetime Tennessee senator better known to most Americans as District Attorney Arthur Branch on "Law & Order," runs for president, some fans may be in for a letdown. Television stations are expected to suspend reruns of the show if he makes a real-life bid for the White House.

Federal campaign law requires broadcasters to give all candidates equal time on the airwaves. That rule applies to entertainment programs like "Law & Order," meaning stations that run the show would be required to give other GOP candidates a like amount of prime-time exposure.

Daddy and Tawd had to tell her how to do the roughin' it stuff. She's really an incompetent when it comes to being an outdoors-woman.
