3/11 quake triggered flash flood, destroying Fukushima farm reservoir, houses (JAPAN)

The March 11 earthquake destroyed the Fujisawa Dam in Sukagawa, Fukushima Prefecture, spilling out nearly 1.5 million tons of water from left to right in this photo taken April 21. (Mainichi)

The March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake triggered flash flooding, destroying a farm reservoir in Sukagawa, Fukushima Prefecture, and leaving seven people dead and another missing.

Flash flooding occurred shortly after the megaquake and destroyed the Fujisawa Dam (about 18 meters in depth and about 133 meters in length) along with 19 houses. Fifty-five other houses were submerged along the Sunoko River.

Northeastern Japan is currently in the middle of the rainy season, but there has been no effort to rebuild the collapsed reservoir's dikes and restore the river's banks, leaving many local residents to worry about another tragedy.

Sho Suzuki, a 16-year-old high school student, and his younger brother Wataru, a 13-year-old junior high school student, were in the living room of their house, about 1 kilometer northeast of the reservoir, on March 11 when the magnitude 9.0 temblor struck immediately after the boys saw an emergency quake bulletin on TV.

Dishes dropped from the shelves, forcing them to get out of their house before returning to clean up.
