Chart: LGBT Equality In The U.S.
Evolving Equality In America
Jim Burroway
June 27th, 2011

We’ve certainly come a long way over the last half-century. In 1960, homosexuality was a criminal act in every state and territory in the union. By 2000, when Vermont enacted civil unions, more than a third of the U.S. population lived in states where gay people were still legally criminals. All that change of course with the 2003 Lawrence v. Texas decision. Gay people were no longer criminals, but they weren’t recognized in any other way either.

1. Some people would like to believe
that no progress was made prior to 2008. The fact is, LGBT activists (or gay rights activists, as they were known back then) have been fighting since the 1950's when the Mattachine Society was formed. Then, of course, there's that little incident that happened on this very date in 1969. In the interest of time, I won't even go into the 80's and 90's with Act Up.

The efforts of LGBT activists are all too often overlooked and charts like the one above offer much needed insight into the historical role of a very successful movement that has been going on for decades. Thanks for posting this, WillyT.

4. It's misnamed - with DOMA, we're not technically equal ANYWHERE in the US
we may have some measures in some states vs others (and that is great progress overall from Lawrence) - but as US citizens, we're still 2nd class in all US states and territories.
