This is just a gut hunch, but I think Romney will getbthe nomination, and he'll be pressured to pick Bachman as his veepee to placate the tea party.

A shotgun marriage, and they'll probably hate each other behind the scenes.

I guess we'll find out a year from now...Luckily if i'm wrong no one will remember this post.

10. Could be a brokered convention.
If none of the whackaloons can grab enough primaries to win the nomination outright, I can see Romney's organization and money cleaning up at the convention. But I'm not sure that helps him in the GE...he may well get a good chunk of the Independents, but I envision a lot of the activist base walking - even if Bachman is on the ticket. They'll perceive this as McCain/Palin II and won't be willing to put a Mormon-Liberal in the WH. They'll stay home or vote 3rd Party.

16. I don't see it.. This is a throwaway election for them
The economy is in the shitter (thanks to their guy George). Nothing is gonna fix it anytime soon, so I can see them nominating a doofus like Perry (who will lose spectacularly, but will curry favor with the teabag people), so they can zoom back in '16 when it's an open seat.. THAT'S when they will bring out their big-gun.. the Jebster. By then his wayward kids will mostly be off the radar and grown up, and his wife's smuggle-pallooza will be pretty much forgotten..

It could be Perry-Bachmann in '12...or even Bachmann-Cain..

I think they are content to have Obama to kick around for 4 more years so they can paint him as the one who "ruined the economy"...

27. I'll say Huntsman-DeMint
Edited on Tue Jun-28-11 04:22 AM by anAustralianobserver
Bachmann, Palin and the social conservatives/reactionaries ultimately pass their Tea Party mantles to DeMint and endorse the ticket, even though Huntsman is too moderate and a Mormon. They are relieved at least that Romney isn't at the top.

Huntsman shows respect to Obama straight away so he isn't constantly expected to snipe at him. He makes a few strategic winking gestures towards Tea Partiers to indicate that he's on their side but has to be subtle about it during the campaign.

I reserve the right to revise my prediction at any time:)

33. Romney, yes, Bachmann, no way.
I'm surprised anyone on DU still doesn't know how this works. They keep the batshit crazy candidate as long as they need her to attract the batshit crazy contingency (Tea Party). At the right time, that candidate is then allowed to lose but with the hopes of retaining enough batshit crazy voters without actually having to deal with the batshit crazy candidate. Romney will pick Pawlenty or one of the other less batshit crazy frontrunners. They're NOT going to let her on the ticket as it would scare away too many sane Republicans (yes, they do exist).

They'd have a shot at turning two blue double-digit electors states red. I'm not saying they would win Mass., but they'd have a shot. They could almost certainly win Minn.

44. Good guess. I said the other day it would be Romney and one of the Nuts
Depending on who runs, it will either be Bachman, Palin or Perry. I'm leaning a bit more toward Perry than Bachman or Palin at the moment. He's a better campaigner and a true team player for the GOP. He's also a hell of a lot smarter (in an evil, calculating way) than the other two put together.

No matter which one it ends up being, they'll bring out all the nuts in force to the polls that Romney fails to excite.

45. No, not Bachmann. Never. Romney, maybe. And he'd throw a bone to the right...
but he'd pick as VP someone who can pass the guffaw test in the national media. He's going to try to make it look like he's moving to the center, but still someone with Tea cred. Herman Cain might be a better bet, but only if he doesn't blow up first (and if he comes across as a team player rather than a dilettante.)

46. Romney and Huntsman are the two most credible candidates they have
so I'd say it's probably smart to assume that one of them at least will be the GOP candidate (if Mitch Daniels were in the running I'd say he'd probably be as strong a contender as either). They have some appearance of being moderates, and a VP choice like Bachmann or Herman Cain would be red meat for the base; I think it's pretty safe to assume that they'll follow the same pattern they tried in '08 with McCain/Palin, but it's still too early to tell who's going to be on the ticket (it won't be Gingrich or Giuliani, I feel pretty confident in predicting that already).

Whoever they nominate I don't really see Obama having a serious challenge; it seems that a lot of the smarter Republicans are already pretty much focused on 2016.

Edited on Tue Jun-28-11 11:33 AM by newportdadde
Jeb in 2016 is just sitting there staring us in the face. Romney has his issues for them but he fits most of the mold. I could see Rubio or Bachman as VP. The GOP tends to put forward whoever is ready for their 'turn' and Romney is probably the one. I think a Bachman/Rubio ticket would be fascinating.

Having read Matt Taibbi's recent article about Bachman I think it would be a mistake to underestimate her. If GE/Disney etc decide to portray her in the media in a positive light things could get scary very fast. It all depends on which reality star they want us to fall in love with, editing can work wonders.

I think Sarah Palin hurt John McCain more than she helped.

If anything, they might use this opportunity to experiment with jilting the Tea Party because I think they will lose the general election anyways.
